I have a 230watt PSU running in a intel845grg,geforcefx5500,256MB RAM.Recently not always but sometime when i turn on my pc a weird sound comes from my case and i think its from psu.Why is it making such sound?

That's an old one there with a 230w supply. Besides a noisey fan wearing out inside the supply or a case fan now loaded with dust the one other thing that could make any sounds are the hard drive or audio alerts from the board's speaker. When was the last time you cleaned out the inside of the case with a can of compressed air?

is it like a buzzing, or a rasping sound? cuz, fro first to second, it could be a bad fan, or a TON of dirt in between your case fan and the fan gaurd

I think its rasping sound.

FIVE MONTHS! !(he said 5 months? egads)You better have a real good look inside to what's growing in there! The dust layer must be about an inch thick by now. I go three weeks and I have to clean the copper fins on the cpu cooler off. Plus by the sounds of it the fans are probably on the way out.

yea dust would be the predominant problem with the fans. it could be comething like a hair wrapped around the fan axle, and twined on really hard. then the end is rubbing the fan as it spins

I would change the PSU if I was you. Also clean the inside and check to see if the CPU fan and other fans are the ones causing the noise.

You can replace the fan in the PSU, but if it's an old 230W unit it isn't really worth it. If you're sure that the noise is coming from the PSU, and not other fans in the system, try cleaning it out, and if that fails, replace it.

On something with a 230w anything could be making noises since the system just wants you to know it's planning it's own retirement party! :P

It will most likely turn out to a be the supply fan about to foobar to the doa list. But if by chance there's an actual case fan on the old system there you will have to look inside to see if it staggering along. If you find it to be the supply's own fan you'll probably end up on EBay looking for a replacement or a slightly higher 250w or 300w model that will work on that system.
