This has just appeared on my desktop, when I turn on the computer it is in the top left hand side of the desktop but can be moved around much like a task bar.

Any ideas? Can't seem to get rid of it!

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried pushing ctrl alt+del and it is not showing anything running and I cannot drag the box to make it larger. It really is very strange.

In the Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) have a look at the "Processes" and see if their is anything unusual being run by USER. Google the whole name and the .exe (so: "*****.exe") and there are a couple of sites that give you a good description of the process. ProcessLibrary.com is a good one. It gives you a risk assessment as well.

Also, in "Start->Applications->Start Up" is there anything that you don't think there should be?

And, "Start->Run->"msconfig"->Start Up". What is listed there??

Doug.

Ive just checked the processes and found one called "dumpreport.exe" this is apparantly a virus of some sort so I have ended the process and deleted all the files I can find, is there any way to check if its still on the pc?

Also I did a search for "ctfmon.exe" and it came up with one result saying its a windows process and another saying its a virus??

However this did still not get rid of the blue patch, I can't seem to shift it.

Any more ideas?

What is ctfmon.exe
- Handy that I happened to stumble across this at work yesterday! So basically, ctfmon.exe isn't harmful.

Now that you have discovered that you have the virus you should create a new post in the Security section, and put the HijackThis and Malware reports in. The sticky at the top of the threads will tell you all about that. Someone will be able to interpret that and tell you what to do (I can't!).

Hope that helps you a bit, Doug.

PS: Obviously now you know you have got a virus don't go shopping online etc just in case.

It not a virus.

When you run a Microsoft Office XP program, the file Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon) runs in the background, even after you quit all Office programs.

This article answers some of the frequently asked questions about the Microsoft Text Services Ctfmon.exe file, which is loaded after installing Office XP Alternative User Input features. This article answers the following questions: What is the Ctfmon.exe (ctfmon) file?

Ctfmon.exe is the file that is responsible for controlling the Alternative User Input technologies. It starts the Language Bar component (in the Systray) and remains running in the background even after you quit an Office XP program. It also starts each time Windows is started and remains in the background, regardless of whether an Office XP program is started.

Ctfmon.exe is designed to continue to run in the background during Windows sessions after the Office XP Alternative User Input components are installed.

I know "ctfmon" isn't a virus. I was talking about "dumpreport" that doidge mentioned in his post that he/she believes is a virus!
