weird wireless problem

hey guys, me and my roomates have a weird problem going on with our wireless. I just moved in with two friends and i hooked up my wireless router and we are all connected to it, 2 desktops, 2 laptops, and 1 or 2 phones. now the problem is that I get really good connection speeds on channel 1 on the router, speedtest.net usually gives me 15-16 mbps. my roomate however hits 1-2 mbps on that channel on his desktop. the opposite is true when we are on channel 11, then i get horrible speeds on my iphone and desktop and he hits good speeds. we cant find a good channel that is good for everyone. any reason for this? its a real PITA.

also, we have comcast high speed internet. everything is wireless except the ps3 and 360, those are hardwired to the router. router being used is a belkin 802.11g.

would upgrading to an n router and n wireless cards in our desktops help anything. we were looking to get one of the n routers that do up to 300mbps but i was thinking that if we were already maxed out through comcast that an n router would not give us any higher speeds. I only get 18.xxmbps when hardwired, so i dont think spending the money for a new router and card would be worth it to get the extra 2.xxmbps download speeds.
