What 19"-wide screen do you recommend? Acer AL1916WAs ??

I've been looking into 19" wide screens for several weeks now. Out of all the ones I have read about so far, I am leaning toward the new Acer AL1916WAs, which is the AL1916Ws, but with 5ms and 700:1 contrast.

For its price, it seems to be getting the best reviews. Here in Europe I can get it for about 185 Euros. and unless there is one that is very superior in quality and costs around 200 Euros or a tiny bit more, I would stay with the Acer one because I can't spend much more than that.

I wanted to get the forum's opinion before ordering it. I mainly want it for word processing, internet, and photo-editing, and movie-viewing.

Also, is a DVI connection that much better than VGA? This monitor only has an analog plug, and I hear all sorts of opinions on it. Overall, I have read that the picture is so good on this monitor, that you wouldn't be able to tell if it is DVI or VGA.

And, anyone know what the TN+Film matrix is? I read it all over, but have no clue what it means or if it is a good thing or an out-dated thing.

Anyway, is anyone familiar with this monitor? I would appreciate your opinion. Thanks in advance!

I would recommend the Acer, but the Hanns-G is also good. I own the 19" non-widescreen version, and it is very nice, but I would still go with the Acer.

Hi Bobo, what would draw you toward the Acer instead of the Hanns-G?

Also, I checked the Hanns-G Hw-191DPB that Burgerbob suggested. I think I can get it here in Europe for around 200 Euros, which would be fine with me. It seems to be the same as the Acer one but with the added bonus that it has both an analog D-sub and a DVI-D connection. In general, I have found a lot more reviews for the Acer than for the Hanns-G. They both get good reviews, but the fact that I have read many more for the Acer, tends to make me want to get that one.

Is the whole digital vs. analog connection something I should really consider or will it not make much difference to me if I am mainly watching videos, and doing word-office and internet related things on my pc? What are the actual advantages of digital vs. analog in this case?

If anyone finds more reviews for the Hanns-G Hw-191DPB, please post the links - I'd like to read more about it if I can.

Thank you all for your responses.

I also own a Hanns-G monitor, the same one as Bobo does. I love it, no dead pixels are any complaints.

As to the whole digital vs analog thing, I believe it doesn't make that big of a difference. But ofcourse, digital should be better.

Hey, I got my monitor

Hey everyone, check this out.

Today I went to a famous electronics store here in Europe to take a look at some monitors before deciding whether to go with the Acer or Hanns-G 19" wide-screen that I would then order online.

Well, it turns out they had the last Acer 20" wide-screen monitor on display at a great price - only 220 Euros!!! because they needed to make room for other monitors. By ordering online, the 19" Acer would have cost 195 Euros with shipping and the Hanns-G 19" about 205 Euros with shipping. So, I decided to go for it and get the Acer AL2016W 20"-wide-screen for the 220 Euros including regular full warranty.

At the store, they hooked it up to a pc and I was able to play around with it for a while to check and make sure all was ok. Well, I couldn't find anything wrong and now it's sitting on my desk.

I'm stoked. I love the wide-screen and the 20" size is definitely nice. Max res is 1680x1050. The reaction time is 8ms instead of 5ms on the 19", but since I hardly ever play games, it's fine for me.

Anyway, I'm a happy man and I just wanted to share it others that can relate to that joy. :)

I like the Acer flat panels for some reason. They're inexpensive and they work well. Nice picture. Good color. Nothing fancy. Even the 8ms ones handle games nicely (I play my favorite game, Quake 4, on one no problems). I would say it's a great buy.
