I'm upgrading my computer.

Here is the setup:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz FSB1333MHz L2-12MB Overclocked to 3.4GHz
EVGA 780i SLI 132-CK-NF78-A1 Motherboard
EVGA nVidia GeForce 8800GTS 512MB Video card
4GB DDR II 1066Mhz Reaper w/EPP (2GB x 2) (OCZ) Memory
Apevia X-Cruiser Case
Zalman CNPS9700NT CPU Fan
750W Cooler Master Real Power Pro (RS750ACAAA1) Power supply

Question: Is it fine to run only one videocard on a SLI motherboard?

Also, for around 300$, is that the best Video card i can get? Would it be better to get 2 lower quality Video cards in SLI mode?

There is no need to run the motherboard you have chosen with more than one video card. It should work fine.

As for what type of video card you should choose I will leave that advice to someone else.

I don't know how effective 8800GTs are in SLI but the cheapest option wouuld be to buy another 8800GT, those are being sold for pretty cheap now. For $300, the best video card you can get is a single Radeon 4870 which will pretty much destroy even 2 8800GTs in SLI.

Agreed, the 4870 is dominating right now :D

Here is a few recomendations for you on video cards. Me...I would not buy the 8800GTS....it is a good card but there is better cards. It really depends on what you are doing with the computer that determines which card is best. I am helping a guy with a build that mainly does Photoshop and picture editing....for him the 8800GTS is perfect and only costs $110. But if plan on doing serious gaming, the 8800GTS would not be your best bet right now. If you are paying $300 for an 8800GTS....you might want to re-think that choice.

Here is a couple ideas for ya...look through them and see what fits your needs.

PNY XLR8 GeForce 8800 GTS for $110

There are some good deals on the 9600 series right now. You might want to consider these also.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll go with the GTX260, it seems to be the best choice for around 300$

And if i need to, i will get another one and run in SLI mode

So the GTX 260 is better than the HD4870?
Im so confused :P

The GTX 260 is simply a manufacturer model number. It has nothing to do with the video card specifications. When you look at specifications on video cards you want to look at the following: for example "BFG Tech BFGEGTX260896E GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card"

The "896MB" is 896 megabytes of "GDDR3" (graphics double data rate 3 random access memory)

"448-bit" is the data path (liken it to a 448 lane highway).

Looking at more specifications on the GeForce GTX 260 video card we find 576 megahertz core clock. This means the video card goes through 576 million cycles in one second.

This is my limited understanding of video card specifications.
