What am I looking for in a case?

Hello all,

I have a relatively good knowledge on hardware and building computers, but there is something that I always struggle with. This is cases I don't know what to look for in a case.

How do I know what case I need?
What are the things I should look out for?

Also I have read the 101 on cases but I didn't really get what they were saying...
Thanks

Look for the correct form factor, adequate cooling, and noise factor.

Other than that, its all looks and getting a case from a reputable manufacturer

The one thing I would look for in a case is whether or not it has front panel USB 3.0. Or eSATA if that's your preference.

Personally, I don't like cases with a front cover blocking the optical drives. Having to open a stupid cover every time I have to use the disk drive is stupid.

Good fan support is a plus. If you plan on water cooling make sure there is placement for the radiator.

I like a case with a HDD activity LED.

I typically just look for something affordable, with good cable management for the most part and has lots of space for fans. As Smith mentioned, a HDD activity LED is also really nice. You also just need to be sure that it is the right form factor for the build.

You also just need to think about your preferences as far as aesthetics are concerned. Do you want a side panel window, do you want any LEDs at all, do you want a specific color? That sort of thing.

Personally, this is what I went with when I made this decision.
