What am I missing here...?

Hi guys. So I'm looking to build a well-performing desktop for HD (real-life) video editing (After effects), image editing (Photoshop and Gimp), gaming (Diablo 3) and overall general use (youtube, microsoft office applications, etc.)

My price range is anywhere up to $1.6k AUD. (Roughly $1.55k USD)

Edit: I've improved(?) upon my previously mentioned list, and I now have these in mind:

  • HDD: 1TB, 7200RPM, 32MB or 64MB cache buffer (Seagate or Western Digital)
  • RAM: Corsair 16GB Memory Kit (2x8) 1333MHz
  • CPU: Intel i7 3770k
  • Graphics: Nvidea GeForce GTX 670, 2GB
  • Motherboard: Asrock 277 Extreme4
  • Cooling: Corsair cx600 PSU, 5 fans, ventilated case.
  • OS: 64-bit, win7.

Suggestions? Thanks.

For that amount of money, get an i7 2600k or 3770k. It'll be better at photoshop and all that compared to the AMD system.

And Vram and clock speeds are not the only things that matter. With your price range, a 670 should fit in the budget easily.

I compiled a new list under your recommendations. So thanks a lot. :)

Hey surf, I read your other post involving your curiousity on how the computer works. I noticed that you were fifteen. I am fifteen as well, and I am also looking to build a new PC. I can't help but be curious as to how you are affording a budget of $1.6k. I suppose this is a personal question so you don't have to answer at all if you don't want to :)

Well I'm 14 and my PC cost around £1000 (that's $1538) and I got the money just by saving up for about half a year and I got paid for doing jobs and stuff. So I suspect that's how he's financing his machine too. :D

get a tx650 power supply or better, not a cx600.

you need a case, a cooler master haf series is a good choice or anything just about from corsair or nzxt.

also, it's the letter z, then 77, not a 2 ;)

Also I'd only go for 16GB via 2x8GB DIMMs if you plan to upgrade to 32GB in the future. The 8GB DIMMs run slower than the 4GB DIMMs do, so I'd recommend dropping the 2x8GB setup and going for 4x4GB 1600MHz or 1866MHz instead, something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231429 that's what I have in my system and it's good stuff. :D 4x4GB will also be cheaper than 2x8GB too.

I'd maybe spend a bit more on the motherboard too. Taken a look at the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128544 the ASRock board will work but that Gigabyte board has some nicer features and if you're going for an i7 and 16GBs of RAM, I'd get a nice board too.

+1. I was 15 when I built my system. Granted my system was only around $630 I still just mowed a lot and used birthday money.

Yeah birthday and Christmas money FTW! :) Forgot to mention that. I also forgot to mention I sold some stuff too and I managed to upgrade from an i5 760 to a 2500K by selling the 760 with a board and some RAM (8GB).
