I am making my computer and am seeing stuff about cpu heatsinks. I've seen the ones for ram but not for cpu's and wanted to know, how much do they run for and are they needed??

Yes most definitely! A heat sink draws heat away from a device and spreads it over a bigger surface area. You should never switch a pc on without a cpu heatsink. As for the price it depends on your cpu and how cool you want to go.

Its needed and pricetag is dependent on the make and model of the heatsink

without a heat sink your cpu can fry within 3 seconds. amd I claims 6 seconds I think, just to give you an idea of their importance. its simple CPU gives off heat, cpu has a small surface area, more surface area = more area for heat to spread = better cooling. a fan is a also just as important as heat sink ( than fan blowing over your hs)

if you dont even know what a heat sink is, should you really be building a computer? sry if this seems rude, but really...

most non-oem processors come with a heatsink.

hmmmm well that depends...... the price is based on the material and company. and yada yada yada. do u reli need a hs?..... welll sure you do, if u dont want one then dont get it. just get a new cpu after it fries up with out a hs to cool it down.

some people dont even know what a Heat Sink is no wonder hes gettin a pc hes probley never used a HS b4 lol and yes this is directed at ilovefishsticks

i kinda agree with spacedude... he has a point... u should get ur info straight b4 u take a step further
he does have a point but to be fair, ilovefishsticks is trying to get his info straight by asking us.

He could simply be following a set of instructions (i.e., get this, install that blah blah) and just because he's asking what a HS is doesnt mean he's not gonna install it anyways.

You sure about that?

yes praetor, but when you have little or no knowlege in an area, and you are following instructions, the person may figure its obvious to buy a power cord, but you may not know you need one, and you have a much higher chance of making a expensive mistake, such as not putting on a heatsink, or buying the wrong processor for a motherboard. computers are very sensitive and even a little mistake can cause huge problems. i waited to build my computer untill i was sure i knew enough and wouldnt make a mistake.

The instructions (1) come with the processor and mobo, (2) tell you to put the heatsink on

Furtheremore, see this if theres any confusion left :)
