What are some of the password resetting technique used in the industry?

For example, a Facebook user forgot his password. He select the options in during login that request for a password to be resetted and a new one to be sent to his email..

From what I've seen there are typical two ways and some time even a combination of them.

=> Sends a link to the user's registered e-mail to type in a new password.
=> Requires user to enter in secret phrases.
