What are the advantages of setting up a network?

I recently bought a desktop to add to the laptop I was already using for my home-based business. What are the benefits of setting up a network? Am I able to have the same files on both computers, which will be updated simultaneously on both computers?

I have the Microsoft Office package installed on my laptop, but not on the desktop. If I create a network, will it be possible to use the package on my desktop without buying it again?

This is a pretty broad question, seeing as a network is basically required now of days if you plan on using both computers on the internet at once.

But as for your first bit, yes and no... Files won't be updated on both computers per se but the updated version can be seen on both. IE, if your updated version is on the desktop, it could be viewed/downloaded to the laptop. Now there are programs out there that will sync your laptop with your desktop so the documents on your desktop.

As for office, no. You can not run office (or most any other software like that) across the network. It requires a license per computer. Plus certain files and registry settings would be missing on the computer without the software installed.

The main advantages are file sharing. there are other advanages are remote assistance and network printing,

no the software isn't a VLK (volume License Key) so even if you put it on multiple computers when you update it, it may come back with a validation reuest.
