What are the best AntiVirus, firewall, antispyware, antitrojan?

i use AVG Free 4 anti-virus and trojans, spybot s&d 4 spyware, ewido anti-spyware 4 spyware, and just the windows firewall (if you have XP, thats already built in with XP.)..

all freee..

Geez, I don't know how many times this question could come up in a week.

Anyways, from my tests the best free antivirus is Avast! The best paid one appears to be Panda. The best free antispyware is Ewido. The best paid antispyware is Prevx1. Aftermarket firewalls are nothing but a pain in the butt and generally not necessary, so just use the one in SP2 unless you like giving yourself more headaches than you need to.

free > avast home edition, adaware, spybot s&d, windows firewall. Best of all, they are free and don't make my computer slow like Nav.

Anti Virus = Avast! 4 Home Edition (Free)
Firewall = Sygate Firewall (Free edition available, and good, but the pro's better, although if your behind a router firewall, then the Windows XP firewall is adequate)

Anti Virus: AVG Free or Avast!
Firewall: Comodo or ZoneAlarm
Anti-spyware: Ad-aware, Spybot search and destroy, Spyware Terminator, Windows Defender and Ewido

ZoneAlarm is one of the best firewalls out there, which i have, and its pretty good

No it isn't, is it? I always thought the two main runners were Kerio and Sygate. Any links / sources for the backing of Zone Alarm being one of the best I could look at please?

the absolute best type of security is layered. I like to start outside my machine and with the router. Does the router have built in firewall w/ NAT? Does it offer wireless encryption better than WEP (WPA, WPA2)? Port forwarding, etc.

Then I look at the machines on the network. Do they have firewalls installed. Please note that if something gets past your hardware firewall, your software firewall is probably not going to have much effect. Then look at antivirus/spyware etc.

I like Spysweeper and have used it many times in the past, its 20 bucks per a year subscription and they update it often so its a good deal

Also, use smart passwords, and always keep your security software up to date.

the best antivirus you can find today is Avast! I was using avg, panda, and norton - avast is better than em

The best antispyware are probably ad-aware, ewido, and spyware doctor.

ZoneAlarm is a complete pain in the butt. Completely unnecessary to boot.

Spybot has been rendered totally obsolete. It used to be good, but it has fallen by the wayside and been completely stomped on by it's competition. HJT is pretty much useless now too. Almost completely, but not quite. Unnecessary, however, most definitely. There are much, much better programs out there that do the same job and a whole lot more far more effectively than HJT. HJT was bought out, so there are no longer any updates to it, rather it has been assimilated into a commercial package. Ad-aware has also been rendered obsolete. It's time has come and gone as well.

As with anything, as time passes something inevitably surfaces that is superior. For a while it was Ewido. Then Prevx1 came out and destroyed Ewido. In antivirus, Norton used to be superior. Then Panda came out and spanked it silly. Then companies realized the need to release free AV's, and you got the likes of AVG. Then AVG got spanked silly by Avast! Something newer will come out that will spank Avast! eventually. That is just the way the industry works.

There is no point in keeping a closed mind and clinging on to the past, because you are just rendering your computer open to new infections by your foolishness. It is a continually growing, moving process and you have to constantly do your research and stay on top of it (without hanging on to silly notions and ideas to justify ignorance).

Constantly keeping abreast of the industry by reading on here of the ones that obviously know what they are talking about and have done their homework will help you to stay abreast of the trends and maintain the maximum protection for your PC.
