What are the causes of a laptop randomly turning off?

The laptop is about 7 years old and is a Toshiba Satellite A210. It will random turn off when it is in use but if it's idle, nothing will happen. I have recently upgraded the laptop to windows 7 and in the process, erased anything on the hard drive. I have also just replaced the battery but the problem persists. It will also turn off even when it is charging.

Anything I can do to fix it or is it time for a new laptop? I have considered opening up the laptop and using a compressed air can to clean it out but have yet to do so.

I would suspect overheating. You don't need to actually open the machine, usually simply blowing compressed air through the air intake will clear out most of it if it indeed is bad enough to block air flow. I suppose it depends on how the cooling of your laptop is designed, but it's always worked for me.

Oh, I forgot to mention I have a cooling pad as well.

I'll try that program though, it might prove useful. Any other suggestions?

I would agree that overheating is the most common reason. Laptops get hot easily and mine has a cooling pad as well and when i play games, it reaches temperatures high enough to sometimes get a blue screen ;D
