What are the disadvantages of buying cheap RAM?

The rule you get what you paid for applies, if you buy cheap RAM its like playing Russian roulette, you don't know what you are getting or how long the RAM is going to last. If you want high performance, then you have to pay for it. :D

but can u get away with it? i would like 2 upgrade to 2gb of ram, however i would not like to spend more than about 70 quid. is it worth it?

If you dont plan on overclocking, or tweaking your RAM, then the cheap stuff is fine. Just keep in mind that when you buy cheap RAM, they have higher timings and you wont get as good performance out of it, but the difference is pretty minimal.

£70 can you get your 2GB of Corsair XMS2 DDR2 RAM, it's what I have, check out Ebuyer, you can get good, quality RAM cheap! :P

If you just go on the web, word process and do tasks that are not RAM intensive, then I don't see the harm in getting cheap RAM, just be prepared when it does die on you.

yea, cheap ram is ok. but it WILL die quicker.

gaming pc i had 4 years ago had 4x 512mb sticks of cheap ram. 1 died withen 6 months, 2 more withen a year.

Yea really, The disadvantages of have cheap ram is that (you) will really have cheap ram. Its just like what are the disadvantages of having a 75 Pinto to a new Corvette, they both run. But if you just have the money for the Pinto it make no difference.

If everything is left stock, there wont be much of a difference for the average user. High-end RAM allows for more tweaks, including lowering the timings, and overclocking them.
