What are the most popular PC games?

I just got through the COD World at war DVD on beginner level and making my way through the next level.

Besides this game - what are other popular games - shooter - driving - or other? I was looking forward to Madden's new NFL series coming out this season - but I saw it wasn't available on PC :(

I"m open to games from a year or 2 - if they're good games.

Edit: I'm new to gaming here - COD is my first PC game - since the first version of DOOM I played about a decade ago.

try counter-strike: source

valve/hl2 based games are always fun.

HL2 is great. Episodes one and two add to the story line greatly. Can't wait for Episode 3 :D

Portal is a good strategy game made by Valve.

Yeah CS:S is alotta fun even though it doesn't have up2date graphics. If you want a free copy version of it look up CrossFire.

I would also reccomend Combat Arms, the gameplay is very fast and fun like CS:S but free and slightly better graphics.

This may sound like a cliche but, good driving and shooting games are..

-Delta Force (There lots of different versions, go with Delta Force: Extreme)
-Grand Theft Auto's are good driving/shooting games.
-Need For Speed: Underground 2 (Personally I think the best NFS, all the modern ones have cops in them which make it virtually impossible to drive round.

If you like RTS games i have to recommend the total war games, eg: Rome - Total War.
Very fun and entertaining. for shooters, DOOM 3 is nice n scary, Armed Assault is another good game. Need for Speed: Carbon for racing.
Definately get CS:S though. Graphics are getting a bit old but the game is awesome.. Fallout 3 is good, only played it on 360 though.
Get the command and conquer games, preferrably the first decade. 12 games in 1 box.

I am playing three great games at the mo,
FEAR 2
NEED FOR SPEED MOST WANTED (yet again) and
RAINBOW 6 Vegas 2
recommand them all to anyone who likes shooters or racing

Warcraft III

Warcraft III

Warcraft III

did I mention Warcraft III?

Don't forget about Warcraft III

To the OP: I'd highly recommend the following:

Team Fortress 2

Half Life 2 (also, Half Life 2 episodes 1 and 2.)

Rainbow 6 Vegas 2

Combat Arms <--- that one is actually free to download.

I would say the best game to buy would be The Orange Box. It costs $30, and comes with 5 games: Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2, HL2:ep1, HL2:ep2, and Portal - all of them are great games. Episode 1 and Portal are a bit short, but it's definitely worth the money.

To be honest, counter strike source is getting really old. I personally dont see whats so amazing about it. It was a good game dont get me wrong but that was 2+ years ago. As far as shooters go, I'd much rather play COD4 or even Americas Army 3 (when it works - free btw) over CSS.

I'd still recommend the Orange Box to everyone who doesnt have it (even those who aren't big fans of FPS).

Driving genre has sort of slowed down it seems but I'd still try GRID if youre into racing.

I'm going to have to add BF2, the ranking system is just too addictive. And I love all the strategy that's involved, the squad and commander system.

I just got into Overlord too, since Overlord II came out I thought I would try it out. It was only $6 at the store I bought it at, a good break from FPS games.

I'd be weary of Delta Force: Extreme, Gamespot (only review I've read) said it was actually pretty bad.

Also, Combat Arms has a TON of hackers, as well as Counter Strike: Source, so keep an eye out for that. However not everyone hacks, so the games are still enjoyable.

Also you might throw in Plants vs. Zombies. It's a quick tower defense game for only 20 bucks, that provides HOURS of play. It's worth a look, I've been playing it for the past few weeks and it's fun to load up and play a level or two.
