on my mobo, i have these fan slots

AUX fan1
SYS fan1
OTES fan1
NB fan1

do i just plug the case fans in there? or do the case fans use that adapter i got which changes it into a 4pin molex which intern is was by my 2 optical drives and my video card.

so what are they for?

You plug fans in to those that you want the motherboard to be able to control. Plugging a fan directly into the PS keeps it running full speed all the time. Plugging them into those slots lets the mother board decrease their speed if full flow isn't needed to keep noise down and allows you to monitor their speed through a utility. That's helpfull because it can warn you if a critical fan (heatsink, PS, ect) dies.

oh sweet, i have for case fans and four empty slots. the cpu one is used.
ok ill plug my case fans in those 4 slots stated above.

thanks for the quick and helpfull reply!

What motherboard is this?

If there's an OTES fan connector it should be taken by the OTES fans. I didn't think they put on the fan connector if the board didn't have the OTES fans. Same goes for the NB whether or not it's passive or active.

the mother board is the one in my sig.

ABIT AN8-ULTRA Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra

why? some of those fans are not to be used with case fans?

yes, i do have only one of each of these fan slots
AUX fan1
SYS fan1
OTES fan1
NB fan1

Now, what does NB, OTES, SYS, AUX all stand for?

the aux fan is there for whatever you want to use it for.
if your board doesn't have the OTES cooling system you can also use that for whatever you want.
The NB connector is for the northbridge, im guessing yours is passively cooled at the moment with just a heatsink, they leave the option for it there because you can get actively cooled heatsinks for them and it just gives you the option to connect a fan to it.

yes, i am only cooling with a heatsink.
and i am only using one of my fan connecters on my mobo, its the cpu fan1 for the heatsink fan.
now, with all these fan connectors im no using, can i use them for the case fans?

which connectors CANT i use?

the one labelled cpu1 is for your cpu, although there's nothing to stop you using any of them.
if there's nothing connected to any of the connections you mentioned then you should be fine to use them for other fans

ok cool

i have 4 fans.
the 3 outtake fans will connect to the mobo and will auto adjust their rpm to the cpu useage and the one intake will be hooked up to the 12v psu and always blow at the highest rpm.

thanks, all i have to do now is wait for my replacement psu and hope the my mobo isnt fried!
