Whats better a notebook or a desktop?

Hey whats better to modd. A notebook or a desktop. My mom is buying one of these for me for Christmas and she wants to know which one I want. She will spend $650.00 Which one would be better for gaming? I am thinking the notebook because I can take it with me but what would be better? Thanks

100% deffinately a desktop, you get more perfromace for your money, and it is alot asier to mod. You have room for expansion in a desktop whih you dont in a notebook. Also notebooks usualy have intergrated graphics cards, so you will basicaly not be able to upgrade that either. So without a shadow of a doubt if you want gaming and modding capability, go for desktop. If you want to do word processing and things on the move get a notebook.
 
It can be BUT you have to pay ALOT to get a note book that is as good as gaming as a desktop. Say a $700 desktop would perform as good as a $1200 notebook. This is not an acurate measurment just what I would expect, because the notebook has to be compressed into a small space so would prove to be more expensive to produce same performance.

Can I ask what sort of game do you wish to run on your new computer?? because if they are low CPU and GPU intensive games it will not matter which one you get but if you want to run games such as Half life 2 you will not be able to do that succesfully on a $600 notebook.

I am not sure, but you don't want to play games on notebook,
well, i saw a amazing gaming notebook from alienware for $5000, is it worth it?
generally I think, notebook is for Microsoft word only,
so buy a notebook for word processing???($500-$1000, )
or buy a good gaming desktop for may be $1000-$1500...
(It's Christmas, spend some money)
With same performance, desktops are so much cheaper than notebooks...

well, in your case, i guess buying a desktop for $650 would be much better,
but you can't really expect to get much for $650 these days,
because even the cheapest lcd screen would cost $200.
Good luck though, you might find some interests in researching.
The price is going down every second.

I bought my raptor hard drive(74gb) for $230 Can, and now they lowered its price by $30 within a week.

Don't lose your hope, this is your chance to learn more about computers...
May be you can build your own computer, its very interesting.
Also, people in this forum are really good at helping...
 
if i were you, id ask for her to keep the money and add another 400 to it on your birthday or something so you can get a worthwile desktop computer.
 
Also don't go for beuty with neon lights and LEDs and stuff. Look for a rig that has the most boring case as the case will cost like £20 instead of £100+ for case and LEDs. This way you get more internals for your money (its what counts).

Ohh just realised, you live in a "Womens institute" does that mean your like the 3rd female user on this site :P. OR does WI stand for something else in USA or where ever you come from ? ? ?
 
Yes, I'm the loser who voted for Notebook. :rolleyes:

I was a long time desktop builder, so I know it's much more affordable and you have more of a selection of components. But this day in age, I've moved away from desktops- don't like being strapped down and now enjoying the freedom with laptops. My current desktop only has a Geforce mx440, but my notebook is packing a 128mb x700 with 2gigs of RAM. My next upgrade will be an x1600, maybe in 4-5 months.

No computer is worth $5000 because it'll be outdated in a month or two. As for Alienware, they're just a boutique shop. Like Sager, ABS, Hypersonic, and VoodooPC, they just rebrand other people's laptops. If you look at their site, all I see is Compal, Asus, and Clevo. I see VoodooPC has a computer that's normally $1300, but they've got it for over $2600 with they're paint job. It's nice, but not $1300 kinda nice. In this case, your $5000 will cover that Alien head sticking out of the lid. :P
