I've been looking so much at the higher end, I haven't even
worked with my budget. Any guess as to what I can get
with that much? :D

well beings in the stats its only about 522$. that will not get you far at all. your best bet is to buy a built computer for HP or Dell. or even look on craigslist at locals who sell computers.

be sure to check out the prices ppl post as most go higher than their worth.

heres a list of computers to give you idea of your range you can get for that much.

Ummmmm......... $660CAD is plenty to build a decent rig...

yea but decent in most computer users isnt worth it. its better to save up and build a great computer at that time. to build a computer to fit a budget somewhere along the lines something is gonna get the bottom end and cause the rig to be incomplete.

happened to me when i built my rig i ran out of money and had to settle with a lower end gfx and lcd monitor. i finally upgraded both after 5 months after build.

my rig cost me a total 1045 all form newegg. but now its dropping in price. so just dont go on a spending spree and keep it economical on that price range

$429CAD buys this: (I'm not sure if the 350W is enough though, haven't checked yet)

35.00 CASE 3011 MID TOWER CASE + PSU 350W included
99.00 CPU INTEL DUAL CORE E5200 64BIT 2.5GHZ
40.00 HSINKOCZ VENDETTA 2 COOLING FAN
70.00 MOBO GIGABYTE LGA775 1600OC DDR2 MATX MOTHERBOARD
29.00 DVD LG DVD+RW 22x8x16
58.00 DISK SEAGATE ST3320613AS 320GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache
58.00 RAM 2x CRUICAL 2GB, 240-pin DIMM, DDR2 PC2-6400
40.00 GPU BFG GeForce 7600GS 256mb OC PCI-Express Video Card - Web Only

It's crap, but it's better than my 2001 pentium 4, 512 ram, nvidia geforce 5200 :P

Go AMD, seriously, you'll get a lot more for the money. Also what's the cooling fan for? There's no need, the CPU should come with a fan, and as long you're not doing a ton of overclocking you won't need anything better. And that GPU... you might as well just find a mobo with good integrated graphics if you're gonna settle for something like that.

Great advice -- thanks.

I don't know anything about AMD though :D What sort
of CPU & motherboard combo would you recommend?

Well, it really depends what you want your rig to do... for what I do I like the rig in my sig, it works great and is pretty inexpensive too. So, what are you going to be using it for? That way I'll know what you're gonna need. :)

It's nice that the option of cheap computer is available. But
upon consideration, I'll just pay an extra $400 and go with a
quad core.

I need it for photoshop, website design, skype/msn/winamp
always open, and gaming.

I'd check out some of the barebone deals on Tigerdirect...if you look at the right time you can get a pretty sweet deal.

And I'm talking about the Canadian site in CDN $$. They had some excellent AMD barebones on boxing week.

Well, thats funny because I made a thread a few days ago with the same budget and for the same purpose(ps/lightroom dreamweaver aim chrome/firefoxe flash) just everything a webdesigner needs. A lot of people on the forums recommended a few really good setups. Then the next day this deal popped up:
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=533491&t=1139745

and I jumped on it. Added the 22" for $60 and 2nd optical drive for $10. With tax and free shipping I paid about $675

I think this will serve my purposes very well. The screen will give me all the real estate I'll ever need. and the 3gb ram/quad proc. will hopefully be sufficient for my programs.

who knows if my business takes off, ill build one base around an i7 :P

good luck to you my friend.
