I have an older Dell Dimension 3000. It has XP Pro on it. It was working fine, but it is basically a back-up computer, and I hadn't used it for a while. I turned it on today, it went to the Dell screen, then began to load XP, went black, and then went back to the Dell screen again. From that point it did nothing but repeat the cycle over and over again, never loading XP.
There are trouble lights on the back of Dells (4 in a row) that let you know if there are any problems. It sowed in this sequence: yellow, green, green, yellow. It indicated a hard drive problem.
I tried another hard drive, the same light pattern happened, indicating a hard drive problem, but about a minute later, it started to load XP, and everything was fine, all 4 lights had turned green. But, every time you turn it off, and then back on, it again goes to the bad hard drive light pattern, hangs up with a black screen for nearly a full minute, then the lights turn green again, XP loads, and everything works fine. When you turn it off, and then back on, again, the bad hard drive light pattern is back, the screen is black for about a minute, green lights come on again, and it loads and works fine. What could be causing the hang-up?
Is this a motherboard problem? Or is it something else? I have tried several different hard drives, same thing.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
