What computer for new games?

I've got an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 1.9 GHz, 768 mb RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro. I've tried running HL2, and it works and all, but there are sound skips and a bit lagging.
I was wondering what hardware would let me run this game, and Doom 3, at highest setting without any slowing down. If that's possible, that is.

As far as I know, you can't run Doom 3 with maximum settings without lagging yet, since the ultra quality demands 512 MB video card memory.

And I can't see why Half life 2 isn't working for you properly. I have radeon 9600 and Sempron 2800+, and it runs pretty much flawlessly.

Well didn't try it much. :p I'm running 800x600, medium shadows and textures, high on the other stuff, but with medium sound. Not much difference with high quality sound.
It's not lagging to the point of unplayability, but it does skip a bit here and there.

Well it may be your cpu, because I'm not getting a really great fps in HL2 (sometimes goes down to about 40's/50's, when theres not much stuff goin on, its like 70+) and I think that my cpu is holding me back. I use all high settings, but no filtering and that stuff for now.

How much money you got to spend?

I imagine a setup like the one in my sig would allow you to play any game you can think of with out any lag :)

Maby hardver is not problem maby you have some programs that slow your computer and that is why you cant play normal its hapen to me lot of time now its hapening with warcraft III TFT
