what could be wrong with my computer.

i think it might be the harddrive and motherboard but ill get your opinions.
its a custom build done cheap so it probably is the motherboard but the specs

3gb ram, 3.1 single core amd2+, cheapy cheap motherboard, 250 hitachi deathstar hdd, 1gb ati graphics card, generic powersupply

i know its not the best specs arround but i was doing it just as a cost saving excersice which didnt work about a year and a half ago

but i had problems almost straight away
1st the hdd i 1st orderd wouldnt even start to run so got a replacement

then almost 2 months later it would just disconnect from the internet (through my belkin wifi adapted) and come up saying something like "usb devices will perform faster through at usb 2 port" and then had to reboot to get the internet to work again. :confused:
so after that of 6 months i put it in the loft and got my laptop and now i was wondering about fixing it but im not sure what to replace.

i was thinking about replacing the powersupply, motherboard and hdd, anything else or just relpace the lot?
i dont need a megga fast processor as its only on xp and its just for basic stuff like msn and office '07

the message your getting regarding the usb ports usual appears if your plugged into a usb 1.1 port and there are usb 2.0 ports available maybe not all the ports on your machine are usb 2.0, as far as your hardware problems go if its a cheap power supply and motherboard i would start there first, probably with the board first.
 
Please be more specific as to the brand and models of your hardware.

Also, anytime I read generic power supply a large red flag is hoisted. What is the make, model and supplied wattage of your psu?

its "powerteck" or something like that and 500w

and i think the motherboard was something rubbish like ECS?

and the thing with the wifi, would only show up say 10-30 mins of using and reffuse to let the wifi work, but up untill that ppoint it would be running on the 2.0 usb

also, my computer would crash almost every hour if the wifi didnt cut out anyway.
 
Agreed sounds like the psu try replacing that first and hope it hasnt damaged the m/b which ECS arent that bad compared to others
