What CPU and how big??

I have a 7 year old HP Pav. 1.3Ghz, with 768ram and a Geforce Fx5200 vid card in it, very outdated but alright for the kids, I would like to know how big of a cpu I can use and how do I know which one to buy? Here are some of the specs:
Mobo name Santafe-L
Mobo man. TriGem
Processor AMD Athlon
Side Bus Fre 200 MHz

P.S. What size is a amd athlon 64 3800+ in ghz??
 
either way i suggest you don't upgrade the cpu... its a fine computer for the kids like you said.
athlon 64 3800+ is 2.4ghz... which is approximately 3.8ghz worth of pentium 4 speed. an athlon 64 X2 3800+ is 2ghz which is approximately 3ghz Pentium 4.. but its dual core so thats like hyperthreading only better.

im gonna suggest that you build the computer yourself... but if you just aren't willing to then im gonna suggest you get an HP or a Dell (its really easy to build a comp, a beginner takes probly less than two hours, an experienced builder can do it in a half hour)

whats your budget, and what do you want the computer to be able to do?
for instance, gaming would require a better video card, and video editing would require a better processor, preferably dual core... and both are memory intensive.
if you just want to do internet stuff, then i suggest you go with cheap everything and 1gb of ram just so you can put windows vista on it.
again, budget and uses.

thats why i said its dual core... but yes omega is right, anyone would rather have an X2 3800+ @ 2ghz over a pentium 4 w/ HT at 3ghz... if not then theyre an intel fanboy lol...
either way, i would suggest a core 2 duo, depending on your budget and what you'd like to use it for... the core 2 duo is your best bet if you can spare the money.
