Hey guys, I'm gonna get a new mobo really soon and was wondering something. I've never replaced a motherboard so do I have to format my HD before I change motherboards? Or can I just change the mobo and run the OS CD and format from there?

Thanks! :D

Oh thanks man! So I can just change it have it ready turn it on and run Windows CD and follow steps to format right?

Yeah, just turn your PC off, re-build it with the new parts and then boot it up with the Windows CD and then format it, easy! :)

Don't forget to post up some pictures! :P

sorry guys, but formating the drive is not necesary. windows will automaticaly detect the new drivers that need to be installed. i don't see a reason why you shoud format the hdd.

He's getting a new CPU, RAM and MOBO, I'm pretty sure he'll need to format his HDD... Plus, it'd be SO much easier to put all the drivers on a clean drive.

I changed motherboards 3 times within a week and it was running like crap.I reinstalled windows and it runs like a brand new one now.

Yeah besides I'd like to format it, I'd like ti to be a fresh build!

Do you guys not realize this :P? When I change that motherboard, the hard drive is the last thing left from the OEM Compaq COmputer!! ;) :D :P

This Saturday but since I live really near from Tenessee which is from the parts are sipped, would they take less time? :P If they did they might be here tomorrow! :D I don't know.

The current boot log on the HDD will try and detect the old mobo. It won't be able to boot, but will give him a BSOD. He WILL have to reformat in order to use his drive again.
