AT this time we have a desktop wired and laptop networked to it. The laptop has built in wireless so I have been using an unsecured network that I could get. Now am starting to have connection problems with it so I want to set up my own wireless connection and network wired to the desktop as it does not have a wireless card, (old). My question is what do I need to buy and what's the best for a novice like myself? Thanks for any help Buck

you will need to buy internet access from some ISP in your area and buy a wireless router with a 4 or 5 port switch on the back of it so you can hook your old computer to it.

Hi, you need to have a ISP (Internet Service Provider). When you sign up to them , they will come and install everything and usually give you a free router aswell as a Modem.
If you do get a Router free, your provided modem will plug into one port of that router - just like my router (netgear) and then should be wireless. If you dont get what i am saying, maybe this short diagram will help you !

But anyway, i got a free wireless router along with my broadband package which is Virgin Media UK

For setting up broadband you will need:

- A network adapter (e.g. ethernet port) in one computer so that it can link up to the router/modem

- A wireless adapter (most laptops now a days have it already)

- A ethernet cable for modem to router + router to pc (usually comes free with routers and your ISP should provide you with one)

Most Cable ISPs will not give you a free wireless router. There a fee for it. DSL tho they normally ( if its verizon ) give you a free wireless modem and router.... What ISP do you have? Also, if you currently just have a modem and you want a router to go wired and wireless... I recommend Linksys all the way.

i assume that you are using windows vista,
what you can do is , connect the internet line to your laptop and creat wireless adhoc network share and bridge the internet connection with your wireless network, this will save money on the wireless router but you have to buy wireless card for your desktop though, and connect other systems on that network.
this setup will make your laptop itself to behave like a router,
word of caution is that the internet is active only when the laptop is active,
if you are looking for a buisness solution , then buying a new router will be good thing to invest on.
another thing u should be aware of that max range for a wireless network created by this setup is 30 ft, if your requirement is more than that go for a wireless router
