what do i need to set up wifi access on my desktop

hey guys how are you
i would like to set up a wifi conection on my home pc to hopefully access free wifi, and ive been doin a bit of reserce into wirless routers witch i think is what i need ill be ebaying one soon do i need one with a built in modem? and is this the only hardwear i require to do so i dont know mucth about this stuff and would like to know what do i need to enable my desktop pc to do this apart from being in a hot spot location, i already have a 3g wireles broadband modem but the sound of free wifi is very apealing i understand the signal and freqwencys and the basics behind the wifi aplication im into electronics cb radio and vintage profeshional audio so im preety clue'ee any imfo any one could posibly share with me is extreemly apreciated thankyou

You would need a wireless router, and a wireless network adaptor for your desktop. There are a couple different options for the network adaptor. The type of router you would need kind of depends on what your needs are. do you only need it to browse the web and the likes? or would you be doing online gaming?

I'm sure somone out there with more experience will be able to give you too much better options, but thats just an idea on what you would need.
