I am looking to spend around maybe 1000$(flexible) on building a new pc. Right now I'm looking at:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 512K, L2 Cache, Socket 939
ASUS A8V DELUXE K8T890PRO
1 gig KingstonDDR400
SATA Hardrive 250 or something
Radeon 9800 XT

Almost forgot to mention I want to play games with this, pretty hardcorely.

I am not extremely good in hardware so any help would be appreciated. You can tell me what’s good or not good about this setup, what’s missing or too much, or you can start me a completely new setup. I am very open to suggestions.

I would appreciate any help, Thank you.

The cpu you chose is great if you can fit it into the budget
motherboard I would conisder something else. I would proberly go with a nforce3 or 4 chipset instead. something like this would be cheaper and uses pci-e. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-491&depa=1
video card I would consider the geforce 6600GT that cost less then the 9800XT and performs just as good as the radeon 9800XT. PLus the 6600GT comes in pci-e which matches the new motherboard I chose.

If you want to spend more on the motherboard then you can get a nforce4 ultra or sli instead of the plain nforce 4 I chose.

Examples of other more expensive good motherboards

Truthfully on a 1000 budget I would proberly just go with the $90 one I showed in the first paragraph but I figure I show you what out there.

well at least the 9800XT I seen cost like $350. If you want to spend that much on a video card then just buy a geforce 6800GT that I gurentee you is alot better then a 9800XT.

but I dont see a $350 graphic card and a $280 cpu fitting into a $1000 budget unless you spend a lot of time shopping around and finds some great deals and prices.

That one is not pci-e though, does that make any difference?

The 6800GT comes in both agp and pci-e. I think the pci-e 6800GT cost like $20 more.

The type you get have to match the motherboard you choose.

The A8V Deluxe runs off the K8T800Pro chipset, I assume thats a typo :)

.
Provided hes not doing bandwidth intensive stuff, the 9800XT has it beat there :p (of course i agree with your reccomendation)

So in this case 128mgs is better then 256megs?
Video memory doesnt mean all that much :)
