What do the extra 2MB of cash provide in Core 2 Duo?

The extra L2 cache improves performance depending on what type of files you're processing. I'm a member of a folding team and I've noticed a big difference in the performance of CPU's that have larger L2 cache. I have 5 rigs which consists of two Opterons, a [email protected] GHz and a [email protected] GHz., a [email protected] GHz, a Conroe [email protected] GHz and a Conroe [email protected] GHz. On most wu's the Oterons easily beat the D945 but on one particular Wu the D945 wasted both of my Opterons and the only way to account for that difference after comparing it to a D805 clocked at a slightly higher speed is the 20megs of L2 per core. My Conroes of course beats everything but a member of our team is running an E6300 at 3.33 GHz. He has almost the same system. He has the same hard drive, same memory, and same board. On some Wu's we run at viturally the same speed (speed is measure per frame with 100 frames per file and each frame is measured in minutes and seconds). But on some Wu's my E6600 easily has an advantage and again that's largely due to :2. So my advice is that if you intend to overclock and you're more interested in obtaining a high speed, then a clocked CPU will place less strain on the system to get there. But if you are an avid overclocker and you are excellent at keeping things running cool then go for the E6300. Whatever you decide if you're going to be doing some serious overclocking then I recommend that you get a board with an 8 phase voltage regulator for stability.
