im jsut wondering in the Video Card bizness. when nvidia makes a GPU for a video card take for instance the 8800s and a company like (EVGA,XFX,MSI) buys it off of them........... do they just buy the GPU & make the card them selves like designs, size, color etc or do they just put the designs on it and buy the card as it is ?

just a thought

Companies buy the actual video processing unit(vpu) as a single ic chip to use on cards that they design for use with it. It's like when going to Asus or Gigabyte to get a board for either an Intel or AMD cpu. They all use the same cpu while offering different features and performance values depending on the quality of the brand. Cards are designed around the vpu chips available.

ok so they make there own designs and looks but most likely the same size cards at most times and just buy the chip

The Card companys make there own cards, well some probable outsourse some of them and Nvidia just supplies the GPUs. ATI used to make there own branded ATI cards with there own GPUs but since AMD bought them out I dont know if they still will or not. But Nvidia just supplies the GPU.

You will probably find the main reason AMD could buy ATI out is that they are in a position to make the new R600 vpu chips seen. Maybe ATI will soon see a regain of the gaming lead with AMD being the backbone there. Who knows? But don't be surprised to learn that NVidia, AMD, and even Intel are all familiar with outsourcing.
