I know its very expensive, but its a work in progress as well. Id like to get crossfire later on with 2 GPU's.
 
what are you going to be using it for? I assume gaming? If so, the 955 will be enough. The 2600K will outperform it sure, but in my honest opinion, its a waste of money. The 955 will handle just about anything you can throw at it, and yo will save 100 or more on it over the 2600K.
 
OK, i like the input. but would 6 cores be a lot better for when im doing video conversion? I Do a lot of converting to get movies to play on my ipad.

Im very new to building a PC and overclocking it. I want to be able to play the best Games and still be able to run another screen.
 
the six cores would help, but the quad 955 is by no means a slouch. Gaming the 6 core wont really help.
My personal opinion is that you should get the 955 (oc to around 3.8, its just a simple multiplier bump), and spend the savings to get more ram (helps with conversion and editing).
You will be fine running multiple monitors with any of the current generation GPU's.
 
well I wont be home until July and back in mass until august. I will probably build my computer in the fall. So this is all just figures I'm looking at for a build. I want to have as much input and a fool proof build as I can have.
 
I also noticed that the 2600k is only about 50 more then the 955. It says its turbo boost to 3.8 ghz. does that mean its easier to overclock to 3.8?
 
Yeah, Zambezi is Bulldozer. Been conflicting reports in the last few days if it wil work on AM3 socket or not. At first AMD said it was. Then AMD said they changed there mind and said NO, because of performance issues. Only AM3+ with the 900 series chipsets.

Now Asus said it will work on some of Asus AM3 boards with a bios update. And Gigabyte is releasing some new revisions of 800 series boards with a AM3+ socket.

Who knows LOL

I know I am skipping the whole mess and waiting till the (true) 900 series with a AM3+ socket comes out.

definately go for the newer AMD line. It will be cheaper than intel, and probably smoke (or at least match) the SB line, if AMD keeps up with the past.

wasnt really asking if it would work on AM3, I was asking if it is native AM3+. But you really answered that already.
Will the 900 series release at the same time as the Bulldozer chips? or will it be a chip release followed by the chipset to support it?

No. Turbo boost is a auto overclock that limits you to 2 cores at 3.8 when you need speed over power. If you overclock, you will have to disable the turbo boost.

Better to wait. AMD will have a new processor and boards by then and no telling what more processors Intel will release.

The new 900 series should come out right before the processor or right at the same time.
 
Alright, im going to have to keep an eye out on the new amd cpu's coming out. But i do feel like im learning alot. thanks for the info about the turbo boost
 
you may want to wait for someone to confirm that though. I am not 100% on it, just going from what Ive heard here and there.
I do know that it requires a software driver, and that some locked chips (arrandale core P series (locked i3)) can be unlocked by loading the turbo driver. I did this on my Acer lappy before I traded it. Never really did anything heavy enough to trigger Turbo though, so I have no true clue how it really works, just that it auto overclocks.
 
This is all very interesting information, I appreciate it guys. By the time i get home it seems there is going to be so many more options out. I cant wait to be home, Iraq sucks lol. I am on a crappy HP laptop with dialup speed internet
