What do you think, Asus VW224U 22" LCD

I am impressed with the 2ms but I would go with this instead. it has 5ms and runs in 1080.

That's definitely a better deal.

But here's my situation: I currently have two 22" running at 1680x1050, I want to replace my CRT with another 22" because I'll have to ability to span games across three LCDs with my future build (see also newegg wish list).

So I can either get that 22" or sell my old LCDs and get three of those 23" you suggested.... The thing with that though is even the ATI 5870 will struggle running at 5760 x 1080! With the 22"s it would be 5040x1050.

hmm, I guess it will also depend on how much I can sell my current system for.

EDIT: I'm actually using that 23" at work. After a bit of adjustments it's seems pretty good, except for part of the Asus sticker coming off...

That brings up a whole new situation. I have rad your multiple display thread and I completely forgot to factor that in. if you have multiple displays, I don't think that having it run in 1080 it a big deal since you are going to run them to make a bigger display anyway. i'll take more in depth look when I get back from class and hopefully can give some good feedback

What I'm saying is that the GPU (The 5870) will have to render games at 5760 x 1080 if I'm spanning across the three 23" at 1920x1080 each. While if I just replace my CRT with another 22", the rendering resolution would be at 5040x1050, so smoother playing games. Although the ATI5870 is a monster, I'm just not sure how it will handle these resolutions.

However, according to some reviews I read, it seems it will do ok. There's even some setup with 6 monitors, wow!

That card is a beast! I think I know what I am going t do for my next card.

Here is the best article that I can find that explains the multiple monitor setup with the 5870

Alright, I have a question,

I know that you have the 5870 crossfired with the 5450, but what outputs are you going to run them off of? looking at the outputs on your 5870, you can run all three monitors on that card. Or if I am thinking about this right you can run two monitors on the two dvi ports from the 5870 and and one dvi from the 5450. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

tomshardware.com said:
the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity⁶ Edition, which takes full advantage of the GPU’s DisplayPort pipelines. Using six mini-DisplayPort outputs, the card lets you drive as many monitors—right up to the largest 30” LCDs. Theoretically, Eyefinity supports up to an 8192x8192 maximum aggregate screen resolution. But a sextet of 30 inchers running 2560x1600 really only totals 7680x3200. You can expect the Eyefinity⁶ card to launch sometime between now and the end of the year. By the time that happens, you can expect to see Samsung ultra-thin bezel LCDs that make the break between monitors in a multi-display configuration less jarring.

The one that they reviewed on tom's hardware was the eyefility edition and may have other benefits that make it easier to run the 3 30" screens that they tested on. Using the same chipset, I would be surprised to see that your card would not be able to run 3 23" monitors in 5760 x 1080.

I hope that this provided some insight to the resolution question.

As for the original question about the monitor (22" vs 23"). How close are the specs on each of the monitors? If i were going to run a game across all 3 I would want them all to perform and look the same. For example; if you have three monitors are the same size and resolution but differ in contrast ratio, refresh rates, response times, number of display colors...etc. They will look different. You might be able to compare looking through sunglasses that have a slightly different tint to them. The picture is the same. The resolution is the same, (I know that this example is a stretch, but bear with me) but what you actually take in from each monitor will have a slightly different tint to it. This may be annoying, it may not be. I have not messed with multiple displays in gaming to know for myself. It is just something to consider.

Like you said, it depends on what you can get for the other monitors. Or if the difference in specs would even matter to the point that it would justify getting 3 new monitors.

Not crossfired, that wouldn't work to well. I'll be running the 5450 independently, to run my fourth monitor (A smaller LCD currently on top of my center 22"). If I get a 5870 eyefinity 6 edition (depends on price), I won't need that 5450, because the 5870 eyefinity 6 edition can run 6 monitors.

FYI, in order to span games (or any full screen program) across monitors, the monitors must be connected to the same graphics card (this is because you can create a virtual large monitor if the individual monitors are on the same GPU).

I have no question that the card will be able to run at 5760x1080. The question is how well? Crysis full, medium?

On a side note, I prefer keeping framerates high as opposed to lots of eye candy.

Ya that's a good point. One of my 22s is actually a 21.5 and has a slightly different look. But the image is about the same. This is fine for what I do on my PC now, however if I start spanning games, maybe that would be more annoying.

I could always get 3 Asus 22", but then again with the little price difference the 3 23" would probably be worth it if I go down that path.

EDIT: Here's what my current setup looks like (viewed slightly from the side)

I couldn't find a good graph for what you want to do, but this video seems to give a good picture.

I do not believe that the card in this computer is run in crossfire but it might be.

Ya, I did read that review, and what has me worried is what they said on page 5 about those high resolutions.

However, from the look of that video, it seems to run smoothly.

Another thing I can still do is just get a big LCD, like a 26" or 30" or something and just play on that...

EDIT: Never mind, the price of a 26" is the same as buying three of those 23"

EDIT2: Here's something though

EDIT3: Same but without that webcam

EDIT4: Buying an asus 25.5" and two 19" is the same cost as three 23"

EDIT5: Here's an idea! (Based on what a read here) What if I bought the 25.5" and two 17". I place the 17" in portrait so that the resolution becomes 1024x1280 wich almost matches the 25.5" height resolution of 1200. This way I get a lower overall resolution of 3968 x 1200, I get a very large central monitor, but still adding to extra gaming emergence by the 17".

I really like edit 5 with the big screen in the middle and having two smaller extensions on the side. That is a nice little switch you thought of to get it to match the height of the 25.5" monitor. The ones that you have picked out seem to have specs close enough not to matter in game. I think that that is a great choice.

Ya, but it's also alot more money than I should be spending(I'm already spending a ton on a new PC).

I think what I'll do is sell my current system, depending on how much I sell it for I'll either do that 25.5" + 2 17" thing, or just get one 22" so it can be added to my current monitors.

Nice chatting with you salvage :good:

definitely. Even if you just add the monitor to your current system, it will still be more than impressive. Be sure to post some pictures when you are done. I'm sue that more people than just me would like to see how a high performance multiple monitor setup is done.

Oh and I just wanted to commend you on the Multiple Display 101 page. It was easy to follow and had a lot of good info. Great work.

Thanks. I wrote that thing a while back because i didn't have anything better do to at that time (kinda of a long story). But I'm more busy nowadays, maybe if I have the time I'll be able to finally update it.
