What do you think of this $949 laptop?

I was browsing through Newegg as to what I should get since I have a $50 gift card that I got for my birthday. Just for fun I was looking at some dedicated video-based laptops, and I stumbled upon this Asus with an ATI 2600 video card. I dont plan to buy it "yet", but I just want some opinions as to whether you guys this it's a decent buy or not.

seems pretty nice

but seriously, having that card in there is going to suck the battery down in 30 minutes, gauranteed

kinda defeats the purpose

The two main things that seem to lack there for the preinstallation of Vista would be a need for a faster cpu and more memory installed like 2gb in order to make it worth it. The gpu is a mobility model nothing like the power requirements of an X1950 ATI or 8800 series NVidia card. Asus does make some performers for video to add to that.

I can upgrade the RAM to 2GB for only $27 (thanks for the cheap RAM newegg :)), although you are right about the processor not being anything special. So far Dell doesnt have any coupons going on for laptops so I may wait a bit before deciding on getting one.

The reason I made a point on the cpu was the old Socket A build used here saw a 2.205ghz Atholon XP3200. The 939 saw the 3500+ 2.22ghz and now a 3ghz dual core in the new AM2 build. But I would still take an Asus model over any Dell(mare)! :P

can't beat that free pig cushion.

I don't think I will be ordering one anytime soon. But it would be interesting to see how someone I know reacted. :P I'm surprised it wouldn't be a mouse pad or something else however while that's still an ad for Asus.

I love that pig cushion :D I saw it when I was looking at the laptop

But in all seriousness, does anyone else have any input on the laptop itself?

Besides the slower model cpu the one thing to note there is the fastest memory supported which is 667mhz while other portables see DDR2 800. You also see a 5,400rpm sata drive instead of a faster 7,200rpm model. The max resolution is 1280x800 while it does offer a card reader and 56k modem. You wouldn't like for gaming much if you have any plans there.

Where are you looking? All the mid/high end laptops i've seen use DDR2 533 or DDR2 667, i've never seen DDR2 800 in a laptop.

5,400RPM is also decently fast, a lot of companies still use 4200RPM drives.

And why wouldn't it be good for gaming? The ram speed and hard drive speed rarely make a significant difference, the 2600 is a decent gaming card, which is just a bit below the 8600M GT and above the 7700.

EDIT: Now it's only $949 ($50 instant savings).

Is that 2 x 1gb for 27$ ? Because most laptop manufacturers use 2 x 512mb sticks so to get to 2gigs you would need 2 new sticks not one.

Just giving you a headsup incase you really wanted 2 gigs and you have to go back and order another one and have to pay shipping again. Just something to check, which I doubt they state it, so I would go under the assumption that its 2 x 512.

A quick look at the specification seen on the newegg link there shows a single 1gb dimm is the memory it comes with.

My Cousin got that in maylasia it's good gets an hours battery out of it!
Very powerful and fast. To be honest ATI Video cards suit Laptops more than Nvidias even though they just realised the Toshiba Sattilete X250 with dual 8600GT 512mb But if you have a desktop get an Nvidia Card by far

It already has 1x 1GB 667 stick in it, which is why I would just buy a second.

@ PC EYE, you still never said what kind of laptops have DDR2 800 and 7200RPM drives. I know they have them, but they are no way considered standard.

As you see that's the problem with too many laptops since they are behind what you will see in a desktop. Plus you have to consider what the cost will be if you find one now compared to the one you picked out there. A newer model would be seeing 800 not from running DDR2 but DDR3 since 800mhz is on the low end there. 1066 and 1325 wouldn't be what you would see offered.

As you noted laptops at mostly running the low end of DDR2 with the choice of either 533 and 667mhz depending on make and model. Plus they put slower hard drives in to increase the profit margin over seeing a 2 1/2" 7,200rpm drive developed. Performance there is still what you have need for in a desktop as far as not one but all hardwares selected being the ideal. That means faster memory as well as a faster cpu and best options for video. A faster hard drive never hurts!
