What does an ISP do?

and this got me thinking. What exactly does an ISP do.
Does anyone know a website that explains how it works?
They run the cable to your house but then were does that cable go?

How does it get split to be able to access everyones server.

Sorry if this doesnt make sense. Im so confused.

Actually they just provide the service, some ISPs don't even own the cable, they lease it from the telecom companies.

You can register a domain through anyone, but to be a register company you must meet with certain standards and be a part of ARIN, other than that I don't know the specifics.

OK, that is a doc on how the internet works from a network level, not really what your ISP is.

Internet Service Provider - it just provides a service, the connection is the service period. They also offer like email, and sometimes personal webspace. I am not sure how you don't get it, like do you have a specific question?
 
i always thought an isp is where the cable went to a mains type thing and it configured it all out from a master server where it basically controlled everyones internet

an internet service provider does just like its name says: provides internet service. you see your computer connects to an isp modem and that modem connects to their server, and that server connects to the internet. the cabling is just what connects the modem to the computer or your modem to a telephone line, or to your r-6(thats not the right cable is it?) if you have cable internet.

when it comes to connecting all their customers, its kind of like a regular lan network. you have to be within the service area so that they can run the cabling to your house. unless you have satellite internet..

i dont know, maybe some of this made sense

and satelite internet is that how far we've advanced:confused:

Not really...

Your neighborhood router is connected to the ISP, which is connected to the city router, which connects to your state router, which connects to other main DNS servers that make up the internet.

not really with the satellite either. its an alternative for people in more rural areas that dsl and cable isp dont reach. its actually a little slower than dsl if i remember right

K that kinda made sense.

They pretty much split up the cable comming out of your house so you can connect to ever server?
 
This is how i see it:

ISP supplies you with internet

Your modem is connected to your phone and then the phone line is connected to your phone company and then your ISP sends the internet connection to your phone number :o.

i dont see how you get that really...splitting up the cable? nothing in your house connects to a server. anything that you want online, connects centrally to your modem which that alone is connected to an outside source either by cable or phone.
 
Anyone care to draw a picture?

Im begining to feel stupid...i just cant grasp this concept.
Im about to give up and just keep on simply enjoying it. No need to question what works.
