What does it mean to mod a BIOS?

Disclaimer: I'm not sure if this thread should be in this subforum, but it seemed like the best fit to me. I know of bios-mods.com, but I went there already and my question wasn't answered.

Basically though, the BIOS on my HP laptop (InsydeH20 F.35) is pretty much useless, (there's nothing about the hardware you can customize, it's mostly just for looking at information) so I went on Google and saw that you can get extra features. What I want to know though, is that are the features already in the BIOS and a few bytes are changed so they are accessed, ("unlocking" it) or is it a whole other program? If it actually is just replacing it, you still have to get a BIOS that is designed for your computer though, but what is different? (This makes more sense for the former.) If it is the former though, it seems your only choice is to disassemble it, which isn't impossible, (if you know what you're doing) but still a major pain.

You take a great risk on bricking the laptop if you go screwing around. Most newer desktop motherboards have a dual bios so if one screws up you can easily boot to the backup one, laptops don't have this dual bios feature. Laptops are locked down for a reason. You'll increase heat and will have other issues if you only want to overclock. If the laptop isn't fast enough for you then you should have gotten a better one.

Laptops are what they are..

If you want to get into overclocking..etc.. you gotta go with a real desktop.. Trying to mod/overclock a retail HP laptop is gonna end in disaster!!
