we are a small company looking at upgrading our computers. IBM Based
problem 1: everything we are looking at is Vista
problem 2: are biggest client (large corp) still running XP Pro
problem 3: is Vista even the future or will it get skipped
problem 4: i cant afford to be a beta tester (lose business if we fail)

does anyone have any inside, suggestions, should i wait it out?

I'm no professional but Windows 7 is on it's way awfully soon, late 2009, early 2010. And most of the talk I've heard is big business is sticking to the tried and true XP, if that isn't nothing but a well propagated myth, my nooby opinion would be to stick to what works, and requires no extra investment or risk.

If that's less than true, I guess you might have to stay competitive and keep up appearances.. wherever that may take you.

Windows Vienna  I can hardly wait to see if it's going to be a bigger success than the Windows Vista ( and XP :P )

I remember seeing M$ demo it too.. Yeah, here it is,

I dunno about XP. It can't do any worse than Vista, I think, it will do much better. Hey even Bill gates thinks Vista sucks, I've saw a video of him admitting it! Well kind of.

As a system administrator I can tell you that it NEVER pays to be an early adopter. Stick with XP Pro, and Server 2k3, and just upgrade your hardware if you really need it.

My professional opinion is that Vista will be a flop, and it will be like Windows ME, and Vienna or Windows 7 will be better, but it won't pay to be an early adopter of that either.

Create a small test environment, build a new network separate from yours, and test test test test test test, and then test some more. Once it all works then implement it network wide.

Windows 7 is already out on some sites. It was an early release/beta. It can only be found on torrent sites though, therefor its illegal, I believe. But, they were saying it was a trial so maybe not.

Obviously no one is going to run a business network off a beta OS.

It's BETA and I suppose it's going to be much better and much more satisfying than Vista.
Could you tell me, when was the first XP Beta produced, and when the first Vista ( also BETA )? Vista was just an experimental version between the two great Operating systems ( not that I know what's the Windows 7 like :D ) but now...it's all going to be OK...Mwhaha!

That depends on what beta, since there is an early build typically called Alpha stage, and once it hits beta stage they start letting people test it outside their company. My old work had a MSDN subscription. So, I had vista since about 2004ish, and it was Beta 1, the non public beta. I had it running on a gateway laptop, if you want to call it running.

XP, came out in like 2001 I think....and the beta was released sometime in 2000.

As a business stands, there is no need to update at all. We are migrating all of our Macs to Leopard this summer only because of a few key features it offers that we want to have. I have to upgrade all the servers first, then upgrade the clients. I backed up LDAP and already have the ODM and a few replicas up and running and everything seems to be fine so far, but I won't get a full on stress test until those 6,000 users come back from summer break and start trying to log in and access home directories.

Really, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. With windows there is no need to upgrade to vista, none what so ever from a business stand point. In fact, there are only reasons not to upgrade to Vista, period.

when xp pro first came out it was buggy. yea, i think eventually every1 will say "keep vist, the new one is to buggy"

Windows vista is like windows ME. It was only released to test a few features and then microsoft will come out with windows 7 which should be stable.

It was also released to compete with Leopard. Just like WindowsME was released to compete with OS 9.

i posted the original, the thing i am seeing is, as we are looking around to buy new company laptops, people are telling me that you can get XP as of now but there is a plan on the hoizon to eliminate the option to even order a computer with XP. it is all vista and i let them know i cant afford to be a beta tester for them. when there business relies on there computers running there events, what are they going to use, something tried and true was teh general consences. IBM was the company i was talking with, we have been IBM/Lenova based for about 8 years and in no position to update are servers and all to run this. we bought two laptops with vista from them to test em, and had to give em away to some college kids in need, they cant even stand them, shutting down on a regular basis. this is bullshit and the large corporations we do the meetings for are just as lost a we are, the i.t. departments are just in a huge multi billion dollar holding pattern.

If your company is smart and is huge you will just have a MSDN subscription site license, which gives you access to XP professional and you pay MS for it, for however long the license lasts, typically a yearly fee.
