i just put 2gb ddr2 in my pc. the windows system screen in the middle only shows 1.5. is that the max that windows will show or something. cpuid shows all of it. will it still use all of it. i still need to update to sp3 cause my install disk is sp1. ive seen where that makes a difference on some things. but what about on this?

i know it may seem like a noob question. but i was last a builder when 512mb ram and 500Mhz was alot. and ive never had more than a gig of memory.
 
Most likely your onboard video and other things are using up the balance of the memory. Sp3 may or may not make a difference.
 
i got the onboard turned off. will upgrade today. and see what happens. im a little disappointed with this new board. seems like it takes for ever to boot. but once its up and has everything loaded it flys. way faster than the dell!!! will post how sp3 does on it.
 
Have you ran any malware scans lately with Malwarebytes? It's free and just because you have nortons installed doesn't mean you are infection free. Have you ran ccleaner as well? Do you have too many programs starting on bootup? Post a hijackthis log so we can take a look.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
 
this is a brand new install with a new (refurb) board. the specs to this one is in the "in the works" part of the signature. but it has 2gb ddr2 not 1. and no case or power supply yet.

How did it boot up before you starting installing anything else to it right after the fresh install? Did it boot slow then too? How long does it take from the time you turn it on until its at your desktop and ready to go?
 
the wireless card and the sound card were a pain to get going. the dvd drive used to install im a little unsure about. think that could be an issue? maybe on how it got installed?

took about 3 seconds after new install, now it take 15 or more.
 
Wait, your complaining about it taking 15 seconds to go from pressing the power button to seeing your desktop? Thats good actually. And I think it took more than 3 seconds when you did the fresh install to go from power on to desktop view. Sometimes the post screen lasts that long.
 
let me restart and check. but this is not the original problem i was concerned about. i was wondering about the conflicting memory numbers in the begining. (im also trying to juggle with my 6 month old daughter)
 
ok so here is what happened. after the mainboard booted took like 3 or 4 seconds.

it was 36 seconds from the fade in xp logo till it turned black
3 seconds before it showed the login screen
25 from name selection till desktop appeared
30 seconds for all the taskbar items to appear.
almost a full minute later it connected to my router
this actually takes longer than the dell dimension im trying to get out of.

it is all installed on a stand alone drive for now. its a 5400rpm seagate sata 2.5 inch drive. guess i can try another..
 
Remove your wireless card and see if that helps with the boot time. I have a feeling you have a hardware problem and since it worked ok right after the fresh install then it has to be hardware added since.
 
ok. it is in way better shape than it was. im very pleased now. i reinstalled using a different hard drive and dvd rw drive. went in much quicker than before. i think the installation was screwed up or something. but the motherboard is showing 1.527mb memory. i have 2 gigs. what do you think is causing that? onboard video is disabled so its not sharing anything. each one alone shows the full 1 gb memory
 
Go into the bios and tell us how much memory it recognizes. Could be a bad motherboard, I worked on a laptop that was doing something like that. With both sticks in it would only recognize 1gb but each stick worked fine in each different slot. Not sure if a bios update would fix the issue or not.
 
I would say its a bios issue its only recognizing 1.5 gb of memory, or maybe there is a memory setting in there that needs to be changed.
 
this is the message i sent biostar. lets hope they respond. and i will post the results here when i have it. really don't want to go through the hassle of returning this board and getting another. i hate waiting on my new toys. lol

MESSAGE TO BIOSTAR
"I have installed 2GB ddr2 memory in this board and the bios only shows 1.572 GB. what could be causing this issue? will xp and other programs still use the full 2 GB. Onboard VGA is disabled. i have a program called CPUz that shows that the board has 2,048 MB DDR2 memory installed."
