What graphics card to get now?

Which would make you envy me the most? I can't decide between the three, but either way, it's time to upgrade my 7800GT!

Wait for DX10 cards as your card is fine for now. Couple months or more.

No, my card isn't fine. I can't run HDR in CS:S at 1680x1050 and get the framerates I want. Company of Heroes is choppy, and neither FEAR nor AOE3 have ran to my expectations. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is something I'm definitely going to want to play, and it's not as smooth as I want it to be.

From a financial standpoint, it seems smarter to sell my 7800GT before the new cards come out so I can get more cash from it. If I wait for prices on the cards out now to be driven down, I'm not going to get as much for my 7800GT..

That might be true. But think about it. If you get one of those 3 cards NOW, in a few months there prices will also plumet. You're going to pay more now, and end up getting less card for your money. Not to mention, all 3 of those cards will also drop on the "performance scale" compared to the newer cards...so you'll have to upgrade faster to "keep up" and that will cost you even more money.

If you wait and get a new DX10 card, it will last you longer, and you will get better performance. You seem to only care about the games looking good...and not really playing them (no offense) so you'll be saving money by waiting and getting a better card. If you get one of those 3 cards, when the new DX10 cards come out...I bet you'll be looking to upgrade AGAIN, spending even more of your money and getting little in return for a "last generation" card.

Well first off, you cant use full HDR with that video card in CSS.

Second, if you were to pick one of those, I would go with the x1900XT for $30 cheaper then the XTX.

I "play" the game, but it has to run completely smooth first. If the game doesn't, it just isn't as realistic.

Am I the only one that's read the newer cards have been delayed until 07?

buddy, running those games at that resolution is paramount to insanity. if you lower it just one sector, your games will run beautifully. i mean, most people are still UPgrading to a 7800gt, not upgrading to those. but if you are determined to spend the money now, then the X1900XTX is the best card.

That depends on the monitor wouldnt you say? *cough* widescreen *cough*

Yes but cards in that class often struggle with higher res gaming.

Cards

There's nothing wrong with widescreen other than it's more demanding :P

I have a 37" HD LCD myself that runs at 1920x1080 and I ordered an X1900XT 512mb Crossfire edition from newegg for $297. Thats the limit I'd spend. It actually gets higher FPS than the 7900GTX with a Core Duo 2 in FEAR. Which I play a lot. Granted my stuff's not here yet but I've done a lot of reviewing and I'd recommend either the X1900GT or 7900GS for your resolution both are $200 or the X1900XT 256mb for $239 from newegg. The Saphire cards for ATI are the cheapest. My friend has a 20.1 widescreen running the same res you do and he has a 7900GT it's silky smooth. I also built his system and it's using an Opty 165 Oc'd to 2.5 ghz.;)

I Have a 6800 256MB Works Fine. Handles Everything I throw At it. Half Life 2,Counter Strike Source and Day of Defeat No need to Upgrade form what u have now

yea dude, wait for the DX10. If you REALLY cant LIVE without playing your games max, then go for it, but it would be wiser to wait and save money, if you spend about $600-$650 now, its gonna be of no use when the new cards come out soon.

Any crap GPU will run HL2/CS.

Install a new more demanding game like F.E.A.R. or Oblivion, up the res to 1680x1050, and see how that 6800 is coping. ;)

True but sounds like you're referring to the 6800 as crap,it was an awesome card when it was top of the line :P

They are overpriced for their performance. There not much better then an x1900XT, but they cost about $150 more.

Obviously money doesn't seem to be an issue for this guy,so let him pay alot for a little bit better performance.

Get yourself a 7900gt there is actually a pretty substantial boost in performance from the 7800gt to teh 7900gt, I know I had to make the switch after rma'ing my 7800gt. And if you really want good performance get a evga 7900gt ko sc those things overclock like a dream, it will be more then you need. But out of those 3 cards I would go x1950xtx. A little overkill if you ask my opinion though.
