What Happened To Apache!!!

Apache!! I have a problem with apache. I cannot work out how to password protect a complete website including other files types apart from php.

I have googled a number of different password protection sites - some which are based on .htaccess however all of them I could not get to work or did not allow me to protect file types other than php.

.htaccess is a well known password protection soloution which was made by apache themselves and yet still I cannot get this simple protection to work for me. I am not even able to get up the password box.

I am running a windows server with xp. The server has apache installed on there with the website at its root. I am hoping to protect the whole thing instead of a specified members area.

Thanks again for your help,

Brian

have you tried webdav?

Thanks for the reply however,
Could you please explain a little bit more about your suggestion. I have googled it and it seems to be some kind of front end editing system. How can I use this to protect my website

Thanks,

Brian

You thought of using Linux? Complex Unix-based POSIX permissions and access would totally fix your issues.

Windows is NOT secure.

Is it true?

Hey there,

sorry about the late reply - hoping you will look back onto this forum

When you say that windows is not secure do you mean that someone can access other data apart from what I have hosted on the windows server or do you mean windows crashes easily and people can access admin rights on the http files.

The reason I ask this is becoase I also run an email server on the same machine and on top if that a ftp server.
I cannot afford to loose any of this data however the http server is backed up to another server every time the website is updated.

The other thing I like about windows is it allows me to control my server from home. My server is not hosted at home and yet I need quick access to it at home. Thats why I use windows Remote Assistance. Is this also available with the same speed as windows. Theres is rather good and fast.

You can see that I am not very used to linux and yet maybe that is my only option.

Thanks again for your reply,

Brian

What version of Windows are you using?

You can remote desktop into any platform, not just Windows.

If you aren't hosting it, who is?

?

Hey there,

I am hosting however not at my house as the internet connection is not good. I host using a connection at work however I still do have full access to the machine when needed.

I am only using windows xp professional to run apache.

Would it be easier to use an IIS server in terms of password protecting.

Thanks again for your reply,

Brian
