What happens when XP support ends?

I am using XP Professional SP3. I would say that I re-install it about every 4-6 months. When I do, within 24 to 48 hours it has downloaded and installs about 80 to 100 security updates, fixes, etc. Then of course there are the few monthly security fixes, etc every month.

I know that XP support is going away in April, 2014. I know this means that MS will not be developing new anti piracy software and doing any new security or software fixes, but does this also mean that the ones that have been developed will go away? or will my machine still download and install all the current fixes that are available?

I appreciate any help.

You will be able to download and install existing updates but no new updates or hotfixies will be released. Technical support will also be terminated.

Eventually software will stop working with it altogether.
 
XP was good. Been good and support for maybe 10 or 12 yrs. Do an upgrade. I would suggest it. Security and critical ya need mostly, not to mention new hardware.
 
I imagine I will do an upgrade, and I even already have a copy of Win7. The issue is that my wife still uses two DOS programs, which don't work in Win7, and I can't get my printer to work with them either using VM or Dosbox. So, I may go to a dual boot system, and have my wife boot to WinXP when she needs to use those programs.

BTW, how do I download all the current patches and fixes from MS? Will they be together in one file somewhere? Will I have to download each one individually? and then how will I install them after a re-install XP, one at a time also?

You could introduce your wife to the idea of virtual machines. Download VirtualBox (it's free), and install XP in that for her to use her DOS programs on. That way you will have 'XP running inside of 7' if you like. I've got my Grandad doing that who still uses Lotus 1-2-3 which refuses to work on 7 x64.

And I would imagine that you simply go onto Windows Update to obtain updates for XP, like you do now. If you try and update 2000, Me, 98 SE or any of the discontinued MS OSes now, you can download the existing updates from Windows Update.

For the recommendation of using VM, the problem is that no matter what I've tried I cannot get the DOS program to print using VM. The issue seems to be that the motherboard does not have parallel port and I had to buy a PCI parallel port. No matter what drivers I try to install or any advice I've been given in the past I am unable to print to this printer either using VM or Dosbox. The DOS programs my wife uses have no provision, of course, to print to a printer connected by USB.

I do appreciate the information about the updates being available, so I will probably just stick with XP for now.

Ok the way i see xp and ms is that microsoft is going to cancel all the early versions of windows xp which are all x86 32-bit. But the 64-bit was made in 2007 so what i think is the 64-bit is going to end with updates the same time vista does. But when the x86 32-bit versions of windows xp goes out of date but flash player mozilla firefox will still stay in date for a while about 2-3 years. look what happened with windows 2000 it went out of date in 2010 but flash player and mozilla firefox still support it till this day so some people can still be using windows 2000 if they want to use it untill the big dealine. The big dead line is when every thing becomes incompatible with that os, look at windows me,98 all versions, windows 95, nothing supports them any only a few programs today can still be compatible like 7zip or poweriso. So ya i heard the big deadline for windows xp is in 2016 so that is while from now and i think windows 2000 is this year.

P.S. do what to know something interesting you know windows 3.1 was made in 1991 but it didn't go out of date until 2003.

OK about virtual box that virtual machine can't detect you drivers so you have to install everthing so try the official MS virtual Pc this virtual machine is a very great virtual machine and easy to use so here is the newest virtual pc from microsoft right here.

Incorrect. XP x64 came out on April 24, 2005. XP x64 is still XP and ends the same day as x86; April 8 2014. The only software based off XP that has a longer lifecycle is Windows Server 2003 R2, which has an ending support cycle of September 14, 2015.

Vista support ends April 11, 2017.

Windows 7 support ends January 14, 2020

why does the 64-bit end at the same time as the 32-bit. Sorry if you read it i was guessing for the 64-bit it really came out in 2005 wow the version on my friends computer is say 2007 sorry. :(
 
When Windows XP support ends,nothing will happen.Microsoft simply won't make any new updates for it anymore and you will have no support for it from Microsoft anymore also.
Many people will simply continue to use it anyway for the next many years.At least I will...at least until 2020.

The problem is that many people stop using an OS just because Microsoft does not support it anymore.(I will never understand that).
But that's not the case with me.As long as everything I do works like a charm on Windows XP then I really see NO REASON to spend money AND time upgrading an operating system just because Microsoft does not support it anymore.Who cares about that lol...I never needed their support anyway.
I mainly use computers for programming and I am STILL using old Visual Studio 2002 (7.0) which can even be installed and used on older Windows 2000.And Windows XP supports Visual Studio versions all up to 2010 (10.0).So by the time I EVEN update Visual Studio from 2002 (7.0) to Visual Studio 2010 (10.0),it will be probably 2020. or 2025. lol.I don't care for instance if Visual Studio 2012 (11.0) is not supported on Windows XP since I have MANY versions of Visual Studio I can update to BEFORE Visual Studio 2012 (11.0).
Besides...I don't like that new .NET framework 4.5 since applications made in it work only in Windows 7 or later.And that's just stupid since MANY people who will buy programs from me still use Windows XP and some schools use even older OS.So what should I tell them?..."To use my software,you must update OPERATING SYSTEM ONLY" lol...
That is a big cost AND time consuming.
Programs I make on Windows XP work on Windows versions starting all the way from Windows 98 first edition and later.On that way I do not need to worry wether my applications will work or not.Since once you disappoint your clients,it is a lot harder for them to come back to you.
Besides...it is a LOT cheaper for them to just pay for my software rather than paying for my software AND new operating system just so that my software can even work lol.The hell with that!:D

So Windows XP will still rule after april 2014.

It says that because SP2 was released on March 13, 2007.
 
They actually has XP 64 bit way back in 2001, it only ran on Intels Itanium IA-64. But true, XP Pro 64 bit came out in 2005.
 
I think that Microsoft doesn't really care even if XP 64-bit came in 2010. lol.They will do ANYTHING just to kill XP so they can sell their new operating systems and earn money.
I really hate when Microsoft is ready to do anything to kill their older operating systems like The Greatest XP!
And now Windows 8 became Microsoft's most popular thing...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...Windows 8...

It's time for XP to die anyway. It's been out for over 12 years. 7 and 8 are far superior in every way (except for backwards 16-bit capability [but that's what virtual machines are for]).

Like I said, it's approaching 12 years old. It is NOT as secure as Vista, 7, or 8, and it's time for people to move on and upgrade. Did I like it when it was THE OS to use? Yes. But ever since 7 came out I haven't even looked back.

you were the only one to help me out with my external hard drive to boot windows xp also every one else tells me just buy a new hard drive
