What is a good cheap cpu for my for my m2n-sli mother board? Something that is better than the 800mhz 3.0 intel that is on my old computer.

The 3800+ is getting a little outdated, dual core is a lot better now. If you can only spend $100 or so though, the 3800 is the best you'll get. You can get a X2 3800 or 4200 for...around $160-$170 I think.

as far as i know, the 7900GS is about as fast as one of my 7800GTX's.. ( not 100% sure tough ) and they run pretty nice, so im pretty convinced a 7900GS will do good too

i dont think its getting 'outdated'.. besides,.. i didnt notice that much of an improvement when youd from a 2.7GHz 'Venice' to this 2.4GHz dual core (with twice the ammount of chache,.. per core.. so 4 times total) so i dont think it matters that much

Id hope it does, since dual core is standard for new computers. Not everyone has Linux.

i'd get a pentium D 805 if the motherboard supports it. its a great alternative since its less than $100, its dual core, and its overclockable to 4ghz

if you can replace the motherboard you can add a LOT of speed by getting a core 2 duo motherboard and overclocking one of those procs

Also if you're not an overclocker a Core 2 Duo E6300 will still give you a LOT of bang for your buck.
But you might want to just save a little and get a dual core 3800+ as previously mentioned. I ended up just going with a new system instead of 939 which is ending.

Windows XP supports dual-cores, and can support tens of cores as well.
