What is a good external drive for backups?

I was originally thinking of just putting a second internal hard drive in my computer to use for backups, but read in some posts on here that an external might be better in the event of theft. Anyways, is there a particular brand of external drive that is better than others? Or is it best to just buy a drive and put it in an enclosure? Do external drives fail faster than internal due to overheating issues?

Hey that might be a good idea. Best of both worlds. It will having the cooling of an internal and portability also.

Please don't mistake my comment for trying to be funny or a wise a$$, but you DO plan on removing the external from the computer most of the time, right? I mean, if it's connected all the time, they'll just steal that as well.
