what is a virtual private network(VPN)

Hi Music 101,
A VPN's purpose is providing a secure and reliable private connection between computer networks over the Internet. It is great for privacy, and security, basically creating a direct connection between machines through encryption and dedicated connections. It provides people working in different locations with a fast, secure and reliable way to share information. By using a VPN, businesses ensure security as anyone intercepting the encrypted data can't read it. There are different types of VPN based on the level of security and connectivity they provide. It is also available for mobile environments where the endpoint of the VPN roams across networks and is not fixed to a solitary IP address.
It saves time and expense for employees to commute if they work from virtual workplaces, improving productivity for remote employees and reducing costs to the employer. My company has had really positive dealings with Vpnlux. https://www.vpnlux.com/vpn-technologies/ would be a really good place to get clear answers and a better idea of the options available if you are considering the many benefits.
All the best,

From what I've understood it's kind of like creating a LAN network through a tunnel in the internet that's protected so only certain people on the network can access it. That's a very flimy and loose definition but that's how I've always understood it.

a virtual private network (VPN) allows remote connections on the internet to connect to a private local area network (LAN)

e.g. ME-> coffee shop wifi----->home network

it is commonly used for people working at home connectiong to there buisness pc/s

i use it sometimes when hosting servers because i can be very helpful

hope i cleared that up for you :)
