What is Blue screen?

My PC has been working fine till today. But a few minutes ago, it sort of restarted on its own after showing a blue screen with some technical stuff written all over it. I was already told by a friend that its the symptom of Blue Screen of death and after rebooting, Vista's error reporting dialogue box confirmed it.

But what is Blue Screen? Why does it happen? Will this become a frequent occurance? How does it affect my PC? Are there any solutions?

Any helpful answers & suggestions will be very much appreciated
Thanks!

Can happen from anything.

Bad drivers...Dying Ram....Overclock doesn't have enough power....Vista needed 5 more mins of sleep etc etc.

Right click "my computer" go to properties go to advanced system settings then go to Start Up and Recovery then uncheck "automatically restart" so the next BSOD you can write it down and post it.

Also under Writing Debugging Information make sure its set to "Small Memory Dump (128 KB)

So you can post it when it happens...default log is like 300mbs which I doubt many would download.

You might also want to run a memtest to make sure your ram is ok

Run 1-2 passes and it should tell you.

Have you done anything special to your PC as of late?

Thanks for the quick reply Twist86. I followed your advice and did as mentioned. But the memory test thing you suggested didn't boot on my PC. Anyway, it happened again, and I wrote it down this time :-

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Contact your system admin or technical support group for further assistance.

The recent changes made to the system were installation of :
-a 500GB sata hard drive
-a pci sata controller card and its driver
-a virtual cd/dvd mounting software called Virtual Clone Drive (which I is suspect is the problem as the blue screen mentions 'vclone.sys' once)

So what do you think? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!!

I also suspect power might be an issue as my current PSU is a factory default 185W, which might be struggling to keep both the hard drives, dvd rw drive and other usb attachments running.

So can anybody shed more light on this issue?
