What is contrast?

I'm deciding whether to get this monitor or this monitor. I'm not just trying to get size, I'm also looking at the built in speakers But the contrast is significantly lower. My questions: which one should I get and what is "contrast", is lower or higher contrast better?

contrast ratio is the difference between the darkest and lightest colours that the system can give out.

that one because it has higher resolution and it is larger. The speakers on monitors are pointless, the sound quality is crap and the volume is the same

Its the ratio from the lightest to the darkest color. There is DC (dynamic contrast) ratio too. Kinda of a cheap way to make it seem like it has better contrast ratio then it really has by fooling with the backlamp.

Thanks, I'm sorry I couldn't reply. I'll go with the Hanns then. My main computer's wireless adapter just "died" or something, but it won't turn on and now I'm left to my crappy old laptop.
