I am fairly a computer illeterate therefore am asking this question?
what on earth is a firewall and what does it do??
If it does something then what does Antivirus do??

I think i have an idea and would wish that i be corrected??
The firewall is something to do with the packets which enter and leave your computer when you are online. Antivirus is something to do with the computer. But i do not understand why doyou need an antivirus when you have a firewall(because almost all virus' originatefrom the internet.
I prefer that someone refine my thinking about the subject.

To put it simply:

A firewall on your pc is like having a deadbolt and bugler alarm on your house - it stops people getting in unless you open the door and allow them in. It can also work the other way around as well, if a malicious piece of software on your machine is trying to access the net, then the firewall won't let it - like locking the burgler in to prevent them leaving.

Antivirus captures any viruses that may gain access to your machine and stops them doing what they were designed to do. Viruses normally gain access because you have allowed them to. e.g. you downloaded a dodgy piece of software that hid a virus.

Just adding on to what Simon said, a firewall is either a device or software program that blocks malicious packets and attackers from accessing your computer or network devices. They can also be used to block access to certain sites, restrict ports, and many other tasks.

Well then just doesnt it make more sense that we simply format our disk if there is any indication of any virus that is detected on our computer.

It's been proven that without adequate Firewall and Anti Virus protection that you can become infected within 15 seconds of being connected to the Internet.

I emphasize You can

Can you reformat as quick as that:P
