What is it and what does it do?

Does anyone know what this object is called and what's it's purpose?
It's attached next to LED connectors on motherboard...
Thanks! :)

PC Speaker, gives you audible beeps like POST and other diagnostics.

They used to be attached to cases back in the day, but now most of them are standalone and included with the motherboard.

Still included with the case and have never seen them already on the motherboard. Some cases don't even have them included.

I've only seen them bundled with the motherboard in the bag of accessories.
Show me a motherboard at newegg that has the speaker bundled with the motherboard and I'll show you 20 cases that have it bundled with them. I've never seen it come with any motherboard.

In fact here are a few cases with the speaker.

How many more do you want?

What's with the attitude, John? I can see they come with many cases such as the ones you linked to. If you read my comment, I said "I've only seen them bundled with the motherboard". I never said they are never bundled with cases.

Just making a statement and backing it up with facts. I was just wanting you to link me to a motherboard that had them already. In my 15 years of building computers, I've never seen them come with the motherboard. They always come with the case inside the little bag of screws and standoffs.

In my 30 yrs of building PCs, I can't remember a speaker ever coming bundled with the mobo, always with the case. For many years the speaker came pre-mounted in the case. I suppose some mobo mfrs could bundle a speaker but it's not been my experience.

I have a little kit I picked up somewhere that came with one of those little speakers, a momentary contact switch and some LEDs all with leads so they could be plugged into a mobo that was sitting on the bench being tested. Comes in handy at times.

Yeah I've never had a speaker come with the motherboard. Kinda weird now that I think about it.

Guess I was confused, I always thought it came with the mobo...
Yeah I think I even did the same, looked though a few unboxing videos of my mobos and no speaker.

Probably doesn't help that I don't use the damn thing unless there are other issues though :P

My first few PCs only had the speaker for any audio output since sound cards didn't exist yet. I had a program that was written in BASIC that, when run, played a pretty good rendition of Axel F (theme song from "Beverly Hills Cop"). Always amazed me that the little speaker coud sound as good as it did.

John, the motherboard we use for most builds at my workplace does indeed include the speaker. The board is the MSI H81M-P33, an entry level M-ATX motherboard. Yes, we still build Haswell machines. I remember having seen the speakers bundled with a couple of other low end motherboards but I can't remember which ones they were ATM.

OP- Yes the PC speaker or piezo speaker is an interesting animal. As others have mentioned they used to be included in almost every case (nice big loud ones too) but in the past couple of years it appears that most case manufacturers have chosen to save a dollar and have not been including it. Interestingly, most motherboard makers have not picked up the slack, leaving 90% of people who build a computer today without a piezo speaker, and none the wiser.

Adding the the problem is that piezo speakers are not readily available on sites like newegg or at computer shops. These little speakers are an invaluable tool for diagnosing a computer that doesn't want to POST. They can't hold a candle to LCD POSTers (an actual LCD readout on the motherboard that shows a code for various specific faults) but they are still pretty darn useful for what they are.

I have actually written a couple of angryish emails to a couple of major motherboard makers asking them to include this very inexpensive part with their boards. They didn't write back.

The only one newegg actually carries is this one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...re=motherboard_speaker-_-12-201-032-_-Product - However, they sound really weird.

However, I have been getting mine through Frys.

http://www.frys.com/product/6488702?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG $2.99 for a pack of 2 and they work well.

All the computers I have seen in the last 10 years have a speaker built into the motherboard. I have never seen one like this that is attached separately, but I have years ago seen them on the case.
