I am SOOOO frustrated right now. I just bought a Thermaltake Big Typhoon cooler for my CPU. I spent $50.00, and at least 3 hours installation time, and my temps. are the same if not higher!!! I am running idle about 48 degrees celcius. Before it was around 45 degrees celcius. I dont know what the heck the problem is!?!? Can anyone help me? Are these temps normal? Could I have put too much Arctic Silver on??? I put like this much on: O I really dont want to have to take off the HSF again, it is such a pain in the ass. Please help, anyone.

48 C is quite high and should not have been higher after you reapplied new thermal paste. Did you remove the old paste before applying the new? There are many articles and pics on the application of thermal compound.
Before you do anything, are your case fans all clean and free of lint? Last night I cleaned my front intake fan of lint as my cpu temp was creaping up to 37C and lowered it back to 28C were it now sits( P4, 3.0E(Prescott). Doesn't take much to restrict airflow of a 80mm fan.
Make sure your fan, hs are firmly in place.
If reapplying thermal paste, the old paste should and can be removed with alcohol( 99% perferred)
 
Hey. Now its idling at 71 after sitting over night. I guess I will shut it down and redo the whole damn thing. If it doesnt work after that, I dont know what to do.

Holy crap, turn it off now...... thats not good at all. Where is the PC situated, in a desk, box, clay furnace.........

Seriously, whats your wiring like etc.....
 
71 isn;t extream for a P$, but it's too high for ideling.

Make sure its put on all the way tightly, did you just install this? Make sure the h eatsink isn;t clogged with dust. Go into your bio's and turn off any smart fan or power saving extra's they will make your fna go slower when tis not doing much, and this coule bd messing things up.
 
Hey. I turned it off, but I did get it down to 65 by putting a fan directly on it before I turned it off. I took my computer apart again, and now I am about to put the Arctic Silver on again. What do you guys use to get AS5 off the CPU? I used 70% rubbing alcohol, and Mineral spirits. The thing is, it still looks like there is a layer in the "microscopic valleys". I read that if you start with a thermal pad, the wax gets stuck, and you cant get it out. Could that be part of the problem? Also, how do you put the AS5 on? I followed their directions, almost perfectly, and that doesnt seem to work. Do I spread it out on the CPU, or just put a glob on and place the HSF on? Any help/tips/ideas are GREATLY appreciated, even if none of my questions above are awnsered. PLEASE HELP!!!

BTW, it is right next to my desk, on the floor. My room temp. is usually around 78 degrees fahrenheit (about 25-26 celsius) I have 3 fans running, and wires I made sure to maximize airflow by tucking them all in.

you can hone your HSF and your proc by using high grit wet sand paper, but be carful handling the proc when honing, pros usually say to tape the paper to a flat surface and sand by moving the proc across it. that would resolve the "valleys" in both and give better contact. The AS5 is supposed to be spread with a credit card or hard straight edge. thin layer.

Couldnt that damage the CPU? Like void the warranty, or effect the cooling? Also, on the HSF it has a bunch of scratches and little imperfections, could that effect cooling? What I really need now is something to get off the wax that was melted into the microscopic valleys with my first thermal pad. I think that may be effecting my temps. Anyone know how to get wax off?
