What is pagefile.sys ?

I have noticed that there is a file named "pagefile.sys" (1.48 GB) in my C drive.I have not created such file and don't know about this.What is this file ? Can I delete it from my system ? I hope it is not any sort of virus.

I want to create backup image of my C drive and exclude this file, if unnecessary, to reduce the size of my backup image.

I want guidence from the experts.

It is your page file. You can move it to a different drive if you have more than one. Do not delete it. This article should help.

As above it's your system's page file. This is hard drive space mapped as emergency RAM (in case main memory is full) and can be adjusted.
