What is SLI mode?

I have a question, I know there are Graphics cards out there that say "SLI ready" what exactly does that mean? could someone please explain to me what SLI is?

Basically SLI lets you use two identical video cards together, to improve gaming performance. In order to use SLI you need two identical SLI-Ready video cards, and an SLI motherboard.
