What is the best anti virus software to get?
I am getting a new Dell laptop. I am spending about $1,400 on it and want to make sure it last and remains fast. I want to get a good anti virus software for it but don't want it to slow my computer down, but I do want it to fully protect my laptop from viruses and hackers. I am willing to pay money for it so whatever the best anti virus there is is what I want. I will have windows 7 professional on it as well.

I'm suprised you haven't gotten a bunch of different answers already. If you look here,

http://www.computerforum.com/185963-antivirus-program-poll.html

The poll is only about a week old but it shows you what everyone recommends.

The thing is...your gonna get infected, its just a matter of when. It doesn't matter if you use the best program or not. The new malware that is out today can get past anything.

Honestly, I would not recommend the AVG free version. My dad used to use AVG free and has become infected a few times.

Now the paid version is a different story. I was using AVG Internet Security for several years and never had a problem. Recently I just switched to Bitdefender which I like.

Hello ,
I work in a computer shop .
The best AV program that we have ever found + Used very little resorces has been Microsoft security essentials .
Bit defender was a giant fail!
Mcafee/norton/kaspersky RUBBISH!!
Never pay for a AV Program!

Take reviews with a pinch of salt. The known brands are all pretty good. I assume you mean anti-malware which is more general than anti-virus.

What works for one person may not be ideal for someone else. Sometimes the way a program is set up can be very annoying. You need software that will actively scan incoming data and keep and eye on what is happening in your computer. Some defence programs ask you to confirm the running of any new programs/registry changes. That can be annoying but tails off as you generate rules for all your common progs.

Have a second line of defence either with online scans or installed anti-malware software that you only run when you want a backup scan.

Here's some of my experience and I refer you to my "pinch of salt" remark:

Windows Defender - I gave MS a try but it immediately tried to install IE8 which screws up my PC so WD was toast. The simplest option for many.

Bit Defender - took forever to do a start-up scan which I did not seem to be able to stop without generally affecting protection.

AVG - seemed to get bloated after a few years and took a dislike to ZoneAlarm, otherwise worked fine when "new".

I presently use Avast with Comodo Firewall and Defense+, additional scans from Malwarebytes (daily), Spyware Terminator and Spybot S&D.

I tend to agree with Jaimieearl in not paying for AV but users who are not tech-savvy may prefer a one-stop pay solution.
