Well, I guess I might as well add my two cents as well, as you might not have seen my comments in other threads. I feel like a broken record, but here goes anyways.
I used to be a WD Authorized Reseller. I have sold hundreds of WD HDDs (and many hundreds more of other brands) and I have serviced many computers with WD HDDs in them. So, with that said...
I have had more RMAs with WD than any other brand apart from Fujitsu. I would guess at about a 30% failure rate, give or take. That is phenomenally high. Way too high. Their RMA process is decent, and you get a replacement reasonably quickly, but that is not the point. It is a hassle. You lose all your data. They are infamous for their *click click click* noises and wiping out the MFT arbitrarily. They also have serious performance issues in mission critical applications. They simply can not handle the load. They are complete crap in any type of server and/or intense disk accessing. They are a dog performance wise. The Caviar SE is very clearly a low end desktop, light duty use drive only. I stopped being a dealer for them and refused to sell them because they cost me time and money.
For alternatives I do recommend Maxtor/Seagate (same company) or Samsung Spinpoint T HDDs. If you insist on WD, the only way to go is either the Raptor or the Caviar RE.
Anybody can tell you that they have 1 or 2 WD HDDs and they work great. Even Fujitsu can make that claim to fame. However that claim is meaningless and not worth paying attention to. You need to examine a large sample size to get the overall picture and WD simply does not live up to the hype.
