Is westren digital a good company for HDD?, Is there any other good companies that make HDD ?

thanks in advance

Everyone has their horror stories with different brands. Personally, I've had the best luck with Western Digital. They are usally the fastest and most reliable FOR ME.

WD works very well for me, though Hitachi makes about the best laptop HDDs. For a desktop, go with WD (my opinion).

I have tried several different brands but i must say my western digital's are the best i have one that i have been using for like 5 years now and its still just like brand new hasnt missed a beat.

I have had a couple more HD's with WD go bad then other brands, but with that they have the best support warrenty and product replacment, Everything has a three year warrenty, and they normally cover up to 5 anyways, I shipped mine back(On THERE charge, they give you a UPS account number) and had my harddrive back from 12 days of shipping it.

I've never really had any problems with a WD. I also have a couple segates and an Iomega, which have been good to me as well.

ok, How about Seagate?, is it as good as westren digital?

I want to buy HDD for desktop.

I would reccomend either Western Digital or Seagate they both are very good harddrives. I have had 2 western digtal harddrives and did not have a problem with either of them and i have had a Seagate which is what i am using with my current build and i havent had any problems with either of them.

Well, I guess I might as well add my two cents as well, as you might not have seen my comments in other threads. I feel like a broken record, but here goes anyways.

I used to be a WD Authorized Reseller. I have sold hundreds of WD HDDs (and many hundreds more of other brands) and I have serviced many computers with WD HDDs in them. So, with that said...

I have had more RMAs with WD than any other brand apart from Fujitsu. I would guess at about a 30% failure rate, give or take. That is phenomenally high. Way too high. Their RMA process is decent, and you get a replacement reasonably quickly, but that is not the point. It is a hassle. You lose all your data. They are infamous for their *click click click* noises and wiping out the MFT arbitrarily. They also have serious performance issues in mission critical applications. They simply can not handle the load. They are complete crap in any type of server and/or intense disk accessing. They are a dog performance wise. The Caviar SE is very clearly a low end desktop, light duty use drive only. I stopped being a dealer for them and refused to sell them because they cost me time and money.

For alternatives I do recommend Maxtor/Seagate (same company) or Samsung Spinpoint T HDDs. If you insist on WD, the only way to go is either the Raptor or the Caviar RE.

Anybody can tell you that they have 1 or 2 WD HDDs and they work great. Even Fujitsu can make that claim to fame. However that claim is meaningless and not worth paying attention to. You need to examine a large sample size to get the overall picture and WD simply does not live up to the hype.

30% failure rate seems unnaturally high. The acceptable failure rate of electronics are 3-5%. 30% is recall number or perhaps a class action lawsuit number. I doubt it is really that high nation wide.
