What is the best linux and why?

OK guys i'm thinking about running linux from an external hard drive, BUT I don't know which version to get.

What are your opinions?

There is no such things as the best linux and what not.
it all boils down to personal preferences but many of us would agree that ubuntu is the distro with ease of use and understanding

I agree , and also UBUNTU seems to be the most "worked on / developed " project and therefore has the best support available too

I also agree that ubuntu is one of the best distro's to go for, especially if u new to Linux. But also like patrickv said, it does depend on what you want it for and what ur preferences are.
